January 18, 2023 - NEWSLETTER
Hello Centerview Families,
It’s mid-January, which means we’ve hit the mid-point of the school year.
With much left to learn and accomplish, this is the time of year when we have events and opportunities focused on enrollment, registration, and grade level transitions across our Spring Lake Park Schools. Take a moment to review upcoming opportunities in today’s newsletter. If your child is gearing up for a big transition, know we are all here to help make the shift smooth.
Mark your calendar for Panthers for a Purpose coming up in February. The week of giving is February 18-25 and concludes with a big party on Saturday, February 25. It’s a great week of coming together for a good cause.
As always, reach out if you have questions or need clarity in moving forward.
Take care,
Mike
Fourth Grade Families: Introduction to Westwood
When students finish fourth grade at Spring Lake Park elementary schools, they transition to 5th grade at Westwood Intermediate School. Now is the time to get to know Westwood and prepare for next year.
Families of fourth graders are invited to attend a virtual Introduction to Westwood session on Thursday, January 26 and/or an in-person event on Thursday, February 2 to learn more about the school, the transition to 5th grade and to meet members of the Westwood team.
Attend a virtual session Thursday, January 26:
January 26, Coffee and Conversations, 9 a.m. | General WebEx Link | Spanish Immersion WebEx Link
January 26, Lunch and Learn, 1 p.m. | General WebEx Link | Spanish Immersion WebEx Link
January 26, Dessert and Discuss, 6 p.m. | General WebEx Link | Spanish Immersion WebEx Link
The content of each presentation will be the same so families only need to attend one session. If you're not able to make any of these sessions, there will also be a recorded presentation available to families after these sessions with the same great information.
Attend the Westwood Welcome Thursday, February 2, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Fourth grade students and their families will have an opportunity to visit Westwood in-person on February 2, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Attendees will participate in several topic-specific, small group information sessions, dive into common parent questions and tour the building.
Vision screening coming soon
The health office will be conducting vision screening in the next few weeks. This year, we are excited to partner with the Spring Lake Park Lions Club. They will be bringing trained volunteers to use a vision spot screener to screen students for potential vision issues. If you do NOT want your child to participate in vision screening, call the health office by Monday, February 6.
Please have your child wear their glasses on February 9.
Community Event — Jan. 26: Kate Gladdin, Resiliency Speaker
Don't forget to mark your calendar to hear Resiliency Speaker Kate Gladdin share her message on Thursday, January 26 at 6 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center at Spring Lake Park School. The talk will be paired with a health fair at Spring Lake Park High School in the Rotunda where families can learn about community resources.
Kate is a speaker and coach who specializes in uplifting teens and developing their resiliency. Her talks help reduce student anxiety by teaching the power of ''response-ability'' which is the ability to choose a response to any situation based on your perspective of it.
Through Kate's talk, attendees will learn how to:
- Recognize the impact of negative thoughts and self-talk
- Understand the connection between their thoughts, feelings, and reactions
- Use a simple 3-step strategy to quickly change unhelpful thought
- Identify sneaky negative beliefs and transform them
- Develop a growth mindset during times of adversity
For questions, contact Abbey Pierce.
