Hello Kindergarten Families,
Happy October! We had another great week in Kindergarten! Now that we've become more settled and know the school and classroom expectations, we are able to add more learning to our day. In addition to our reading (skills and knowledge) and math times, we started "Handwriting." We will be learning how to write each of the lowercase letters correctly at a pace of about 4 letters per week! We practice writing on our whiteboards using special letter videos that show us fun video clips that start with each letter and how to print it. Teachers are able to go around and hold hand-over-hand to help kids make each letter. It is fun and will help our writing grow a lot!
Now that we are settling in, we are also excited and ready to welcome any classroom volunteers! Ideally, we'd love to have any interested grown ups to sign up for a 30-60 minute chunk of time that remains the same each week. Our biggest need currently is during our math time from 12-1 or 12:30-1:30 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. We are also very open to working with you and your schedule to make anything possible! We've had monthly volunteers, occasional volunteers, and even volunteers cutting and preparing projects from home! We're flexible! Please reach out to your child's teacher if you are interested and we will start to work up some schedules very soon! THANK YOU SO MUCH! We appreciate all volunteers!
Parent/Teacher Conferences are coming up quickly in October. Please be on the lookout for a signup from your child's teacher via email. Conferences can be held in person or virtually, and are usually about 20 minutes long. We look forward to meeting with you soon!
What did we learn at school this week?
In Math skills time, we are learning all about numbers in the environment around us! We have really enjoyed learning and acting out "5 Green and Speckled Frogs". We are focusing mainly on numbers within 5 for now, especially seeing groups of objects around us, but all single digits numbers are a focus for the beginning of Kindergarten. We are continuing to use math TOOLS (like geoblocks and connecting cubes) in various ways to build our own creations! We've enjoyed making our own numbers books after seeing groups of objects in other picture books as examples. Some of these have or will come home in folders soon. Next week will be learning some new math games to add into our math centers time.
In Literacy Knowledge, we've been learning a new nursery rhyme or story each day! Some of our latest include "Baa Baa Black Sheep," "Little Boy Blue", and "Humpty Dumpty." We have been listening for new vocabulary, who the characters are, and rhyming words, among other literacy skills. We do these stories during our snack time to please remember it is so important that children be able to open their own snacks so the teacher doesn't have to stop in the middle of the story! We recommend slider zip lock bags for snacks. Thank you!
Old and New Reminders/Info:
- Please check and EMPTY your child's folder each night. Some folders are bursting at the seams already from the paper from all of September!
- If your child is eating breakfast at school (7:40-8am) please remind them at drop off to go to the lunchroom first! If they are not, please remind them to walk to the back/main playground. (The playground is not supervised until 7:30 am so please do not drop off before 7:30 am.) Car rider drop off lanes may not be supervised until 7:45 am.
- If the weather is rainy or below freezing prior to 8am, please drop your child off at the main doors loop where they should enter the lunchroom and eat or sit behind the blue cone. Lots of teachers will be there to help get them to the right place if they come in the main doors (or the doors by the bike rack in the main loop.) Both doors lead to the lunchroom.
- Please send an individual snack for your child daily in something he/she can open and close INDEPENDENTLY! The teacher is reading a story during snack time! Thanks!
- Please explain to your child if the food in their backpack is a lunch or a snack! Make sure to send non-refrigerated items or send items with ice packs for lunches and afternoon snack time (include untincils if needed.) We have (only) milk break in the AM.
- SNACKS: Children are allowed to eat 2 snacks at snack time. They will be asked to save any extra foods until the next day. Our snack time is short. Thanks for understanding!
- Our school has access to FREE FRUIT which consists of apples, pears, and bananas that your child can choose to enjoy as supplies last each week!
- Please make sure you have lunch/milk funds in your child's account. Let myself or the office know if you need assistance with providing milks, lunches, or snacks.
- Kindergarteners (and their siblings/riding partners) need to be picked up at the South (4K) Loop at the 4K front playground, across the street from the cemetery. Not the main doors.
- If you would like to walk in to drop off your child or pick them up please park in the lot or on the road. The driveway traffic flow must keep moving.
- Please teach your child to buckle themselves quickly and independently or park your car so that we are not holding up the line. Do not get out of your car in the pick up line. Thanks for your understanding of urgency in trying to dismiss a building of 500 children in a timely manner!! We appreciate your cooperation!
- HOMEWORK: As you have probably noticed, Amplify worksheets will be sent home almost daily. You can see from the box in the corner if it was designed for classroom or at-home learning. Completing homework is a family decision and does not need to be returned. Your child will have an advantage if they practice at home the skills that they are learning at school to really get a better and solid understanding. Please do not return the worksheets back to school. Keep them at home. Remember that the biggest advantage you can give your child is READING TO THEM daily!
- Please dress your child in layers to be comfortable outside in the chilly 7:45 am recess and the warm afternoon recess. A sweatshirt should be ON or IN your backpack daily.
- Your child needs to be able to dress/undress independently including buttoning pants, turning sleeves right side out, zipping sweatshirts, and fastening shoes. If your child cannot operate an item independently, please do not wear/bring it to school. Teachers will help after a child has "try 3, before me" (try 3 times yourself) but by this time they are likely to be the last one still at the cubbies while others are outside playing. Thanks for helping!
