Ms. Rooney's News

week of March 16, 2015

Whoa! That's a lot of news this week!

Math Unit 6 Test on Friday, March 27th

Paper copy of study guide will be coming home this week.

This test will check knowledge of fractions: unit fractions, adding and subtracting fractions, adding and subtracting mixed numbers, word problems involving fractions, representing fraction work with illustrations, mixed numbers/improper fractions, completing equations with fractions, multiplying a whole number times a fraction, and reading a line plot for information.

Math measurement mini-unit

The week of March 30th, students will be doing a short mini-unit on measurement.

After returning from Spring Break, we'll begin our Unit 7 work on fractions and decimals.

Math notebooks

Many students are running out of pages in their notebooks. Please check with your child to see if they are in need of a new Math notebook to finish up the year. Thanks!

DreamBox March Madness

The challenge is set! It's Hassman vs Rooney. Students will find out who they are paired up with early next week. Which students in both classes will advance to the next levels of the DreamBox brackets? Math minutes on DreamBox will determine who moves on and makes it to the final four! Ultimate goal -- the DreamBox championship.

Reading and Writing

Our poetry adventures continue. It is our hopes that we will be ready to publish our poetry books shortly after returning from Spring Break. Due to a busy April, we are tentatively looking at Friday, May 1st for our next Writer's Celebration.

We will soon be transitioning to Historical Fiction and writing literary essays.

Fourth Grade Health Class

Permission slips will be coming home Monday for the upcoming fourth grade health class. This is a one time health class for students. The topics of this health class will include reproductive systems, characteristics of puberty, hormones, hygiene, and respect of others. (Boys and girls will be in separate classes for these lessons.) Thursday, March 26th at 6:00pm in the Horizon library you can come in and view the video that students will be watching as a part of this health class. Any questions, please contact Ms. Rooney, or the health teachers -- Mrs. Matkin (701-5532) or Mrs. Holsclaw (701-5679). Please sign and return by Thursday, April 2nd.

Madison field trip coming in April

Permission slips for our field trip to Madison are due Thursday, April 2. Please make checks out to Horizon Elementary. Students will be visiting the Capitol building, Wisconsin Historical Society, and Babcock's Creamery. Any questions, please contact Ms. Rooney.

*At this time all of our chaperone spots are filled. More than 50% of the permission slips returned this week had parents willing to volunteer their time to come on our trip. Thank you as always for being so supportive of our classroom. I wish I could take everyone with us!

Regions -- Next up: Northeastern states of the US

Our Global Connections continue to expand:

We are fortunate to have heard back from several other professionals that are willing to skype with our class, as well as other fourth grade classes. Recently, Dr. Ellen Prager, contacted us and is working to set up a time to talk with us about her job as a marine scientist and author. A perfect connection to our work in Science with ocean waves.

From http://www.gulfbase.org/person/view.php?uid=eprager

Dr. Prager focuses much of her time on bringing earth and ocean science to the public through writing, working with the media, creating innovative partnerships, and special events. She has written articles for scientific journals, public-oriented magazines, and several books including Furious Earth: The Science and Nature of Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Tsunamis, and The Oceans ...... Dr. Prager has also published a series of children’s books with the National Geographic Society, for which she received the 2000 Parents Choice Award. Volcano was released in September 2001 and Earthquakes in March of 2002.

Dr. Prager has participated in research expeditions to places such as the Galapagos Islands, Papua New Guinea, Caribbean, Bahamas and the deep waters of the Florida Reef tract.

Quadblogging

This week our class will have the chance to participate in what's known as quadblogging. Last week we went back to KidBlog and entered in some poetry and other writing that we'd like some feedback on. There will be several other classes from around the US, many from which we have mystery skyped with this year, that will then be reading and giving us feedback on our work.

We are still keeping an eye out for our article in Teaching Today Wisconsin

Connections with the Experts

Animator/illustrator, Wendy Grieb

Our skype with Ms. Wendy Grieb was amazing! Here is a link to her blog where she has her storyboard and final piece for a Phineas and Ferb song.

She told us, if you watch the credits, you will see her name in many episodes.

Ms. Grieb and she sent us an outline of the drawing for the students to keep and color. She has also told us if we need anything else, to contact her. Very cool!
