School News You Can Use
Dear Walden Families,
-Stephanie Strenger
Social Emotional Learning Home Connection #2
During the month of December we will be continuing our school-wide community connection for Leader In Me. The Lighthouse Team (the staff leadership team for Leader in Me) has compiled a short list of activities for your family to try at home. This month, we will be focusing on Habit 2, “Begin with the End in Mind.” This habit reminds us to come up with a plan and create necessary steps in order to reach a goal or accomplish something important to us. Feel free to try one or all of the activities listed below. After completing one or all of them, fill out the Google form.
I will be sharing the opportunity for Habit 3, “Put First Things First,” in January. Our hope is that we have many families that choose to complete the activity we send out each month for all 7 Habits, which will earn you status as a “7 Habits Family.”
OPTION 1
Write a family mission statement and post it somewhere in your house. This mission statement will encompass your family’s values, goals, desired contributions, and/or vision for the future.
Some sentence starters and ideas could include:
Our Family will...
The members in our family believe in ________, _________, and ________ and we will _____________….
The _____ Family aims to always ...
(Write a list of words that encompass your family’s mission statement)
OPTION 2
Draw a picture of a big mountain. At the top of the mountain, write a goal that your child has for his/her future. Then draw pictures or write words up the side of the mountain that will show the steps they will take to reach their goal.
OPTION 3
Choose the busiest day of your child’s week and discuss together how you will make a plan for ensuring that day runs smoothly by thinking with the end in mind? How will you know if you’ve reached your goal?
By participating in this activity, you and your family are on their way to being recognized as a “7 Habits Family”. The completed Google form is due by Friday, Dec. 17th.
Important Winter Weather Information
A reminder that this week, the district sent out updated information regarding winter weather and our plans for this year. If we can predict that a lot of snow will fall, students/staff/families will be given a heads up for a potential e-learning day. Click below to read more on the district website.

While You're in Family Access... Optional Vaccination Status Disclosure For Your 5-11 Year Old
Many families have recently chosen to have their 5-11 year old student vaccinated.
As a reminder, your child is not considered fully vaccinated until two weeks after receiving their second dose.
You can complete an optional form in Family Access to let DPS 109 know that your child is vaccinated. This is the same form that was made available to students ages 12 and older earlier this year. Please click below to log into Family Access.
Why are we asking for this information?
A major benefit of completing the form is that if your child is deemed to be a close contact to a positive case, either in school or outside of it, our contact tracing team will quickly be able to potentially rule out quarantine for those that have voluntarily disclosed their child’s vaccination status or minimize the number of additional tests required to participate in the test to stay program.
Again, filing out this form is entirely optional. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to communications@dps109.org and we will put you in touch with the appropriate department.
