A Message from Mrs. Franciosa...

Hello Evergreen Families,

Last year I had the opportunity to see the students rehearsing for Variety Show at night during the winter as well as attend the final production in April. I so enjoyed watching all the students dancing to terrific song medleys and creating memories and friendships that will last them for years to come. Our Variety Show coordinators have been hard at work already this year and are now inviting students to sign up for the event. Further down in the newsletter you will find an informational flyer and a link to sign-up.

Our next Home and School meeting will be held on this Tuesday (11/15/22) at 7pm via Zoom. The link is below. We hope you can join us!

Our Terrific Third Graders!

Math

Third grade is merging into multiplication! We will be learning how to multiply facts from 0 up to 10. They will see that there are silly and fun ways to memorize certain numbers, along with songs to help them remember these basic facts. Please have your child go onto abcya, xtramath, or use flashcards to help them memorize these basic math facts. The more they practice, the easier it will be!

Science

In science, we are wrapping up our Engineering Unit. We did lots of fun and engaging activities. One activity we did was build a tower with popsicle sticks, toothpicks, and playdoh. Our culminating activity will also be very exciting. For our culminating activity (Upcycling Project), each student is being asked to think like an engineer to turn trash into something new. They have to take 3 pieces of trash and turn them into a new, helpful product. We have a school full of engineers at Evergreen!

Social Studies

Third Grade is just beginning to learn about our Government and its three branches; Legislative, Judicial, and Executive. We will also learn about candidates and elections. We will even learn about the Electoral College. Students will also learn about the need for laws and how an idea becomes a bill and possibly a law.

Reading

In Reading, we are all thinking about “how do people use words to express themselves?” We are reading a variety of texts including letters, poems, and even a story told in text messages! Third graders are continuing to practice annotating as we read and mark up our text. We are focusing on how an author uses figurative language, text features, and graphic features to enhance their message and their writing.

Writing

Some of our students are currently writing a friendly letter to a teacher they previously had. In the letter they have to ask 2 to 3 questions, as well as share a favorite memory. Also, they have to write something that they are learning this year. Once the letters are written, they will be sent to that teacher. Another class is writing PenPal letters to a school in Barrie, Ontario. Our students, along with our penpal friends, are listening to the book, Stuntboy. We are writing to each other questions about the story. Another class is writing and learning about Fractured Fairy Tales. Third graders are very excited and busy with our writing!
