District Updates for our Eagle Family

Thank you Cindy Barksdale and Teresa Mattison for leading our students to serve!

Did you know Cindy and Teresa organized an 8th grade service day "McCarroll Gives Back"? The 8th graders rode a bus to the square to clean up trash, rake leaves, plant flower beds, paint benches, clean windows and serve our community!! Thank you Cindy, Teresa and all of our great middle school teachers who worked on this community service project!!

Legislative Update: Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) signed into law

Setting aside years of political bickering—just as the holiday season approaches—Congressional conferees have finally reached agreement on a comprehensive overhaul of the No Child Left Behind federal education law that was signed by former President George W. Bush 14 years ago. A conference committee of members from the U.S. House and the Senate voted 39 to 1 to approve the overhaul.

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was signed by President Obama on December 10, 2015, and represents good news for our nation’s schools. This bipartisan measure reauthorizes the 50-year-old Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), the nation’s national education law and longstanding commitment to equal opportunity for all students.

Legislative Update: Governor Abbott names Dallas ISD Trustee Mike Morath as Texas' new Education Commissioner

Decatur Board of Trustee members were ready to sign a resolution encouraging Governor Abbott to select a new Education Commissioner for the state of Texas with a background in public education. However, the resolution at the December 14 board meeting was deemed unnecessary as Governor Abbott selected Education Commissioner Mike Morath earlier that same day. After Governor Abbott named Donna Bahorich as the State Board of Education Chair this summer, whose own children have never attended a public school, and recently named Josh Mcgee to the State Pension Review Board, education groups have been concerned about both of these appointments. Our staff served our community so well with "Live Thankfully!"

Decatur ISD students and staff partnered with Mallory Orthodontics to collect, gather, sort, bag and distribute food for families in need in our community. We had over 50 staff members and their families show up Sunday for the "Party with a Purpose" at McCarroll!! We sorted then bagged over 750 bags of food to share with almost 100 families our counselors identified in our own school district who could use a hand up. Each family receives FIVE bags of food and Mallory Orthodontics donated meat for each family to enjoy over the holidays. Thank you to everyone in our district who worked to identify families in need, donated food and/or time, and served a great cause for students in our school and community! #LiveThankfullyDecatur
