Iowa Core-21st Century Learning
The following brochure will serve as one stop shop for all communiy members to learn about the Iowa Core. It will provide information about the rigorous standards put in place to challenge students and prepare them for future success. What is the intent of Iowa Core?
- To establish a clear and rigorous set of standards for all students in Iowa
- To idenitfy what K-12 students should be able demonstrate compotence in Math, Science, English Language Arts, Social Studies, and 21st Century Skills
- To establish high standards so students will be ready for college or a career after high school
What is the impact of Iowa Core on students?
- By establishing clearly defined standards students throughout the state regardless of where they live or what school they attended will be prepared to for future success
- Standards will help schools identify students who might need an additional challenge in school or more support in order to maximize their learning
What is the difference between Standards, Benchmarks, and Indicators?
Standards
Broad definition of what students will learn in a particular subject area
Benchmarks
Detailed expectation of the skills students will learn to support the standard
Provides teachers, students, and community members with learning targets for specific grade spans
Grade Level Indicators
Detailed expectation of learning targets for a specific grade
What is scope and sequence?
Scope and sequence is a clearly identified set of K-12 learning targets and the order they are taught.
- Scope-Detailed expectation of standards that include specific learning targets
- Sequence-Grade level a standard will be taught
