More on Earth Day! BWB and Tree planting!

Two Ways to Celebrate Earth Day this Weekend!

Come plant trees with us this Saturday, April 27, at the Blue Ash Nature Park (next to the Police Department), at 9:30 a.m. We may have extra Shumard Oak seedlings, if you'd like to plant one at home. RSVP to Sarah Newman snewman1@cinci.rr.com to ensure we have enough tools.

Summit Park's Earth Day Celebration begins at noon and runs till 5:00. See www.cincinnatiearthday.com for details.

If your student enjoyed BWB Day, the City of Blue Ash is holding their annual Bike Rodeo on June 21st at Summit Park. Look for pictures/videos of Greene’s walk, bike, and rodeo at www.twitter.com/ehgreeneschool. And don't forget to put your #SycamoreBIKES magnet on your car to remind drivers to share the road with our kids!

* 52% of silicon valley CEO's do not allow their kids to use the tech they sell.

Managing kids and online behavior

  • educate and have frequent conversations with your kids about their online behavior

  • have tech free zones (no smart phones in the bedroom)

  • control the passwords - set up your iTunes or Google Play to require your approval every time an App is downloaded. It prevents kids from downloading their own apps without your knowledge.

  • limit kids exposure to screens - no more than 2 hours per day (outside of school work)

Distracted Society

  • Apps get money by the number of "looks" per day - understand that apps are training you & your kids to "keep looking"

Digital footprint

  • your digital footprint never goes away - if you put something out there, it can always be seen/accessed

  • what you've done in the past can be scanned by a robot (find images that look like you)

  • apps like Instagram "own" any image you/anyone else uploads

  • there are always ways to use a good app for bad/inappropriate purposes (ex: twitch, where people can pay others to do all sorts of stuff)

  • Colleges and companies check your social media footprint

Privacy

  • Public free wifi: criminals are spoofing wifi so that it appears to be the free public wifi - when you connect to a wifi, you may be giving access to everything stored on your phone. Always ask the store manager what the official wifi is named.

  • Metadata is stored on photos: location, date it was taken, etc. When photos are uploaded this information becomes available. Marketing companies use this information for targeting & selling purposes.

Mental Health

  • CDC is reporting increased suicides in tees (average 5 deaths per day)

  • depressions rates: 12-17 yrs - boys 13.6% / girls 36.1%
