The PTO family does so much for our campuses, and we appreciate every single thing! Here are a few highlights. They can't do this without parent participation. Thank you for volunteering your time and making such wonderful donations to make our teachers feel loved.
GES PTO - Served up a Spooktacular soup bar early in October for the Teachers & Staff. The smell permeated the lounge and made it soooo welcoming!
GMS PTO - Created a scrumptious TACO BAR for the teachers in early October. Everything was wonderful! They also celebrated National M&M's day by leaving a GMS display full of candy! The teacher's lounge gifted a new popcorn machine by the PTO, and the teachers love it!
GHS PTO - In conjunction with Cody Paxman from State Farm, the teachers found a Magical table full of treats and bags to collect the goodies!

Treat Yourself!
The GISD Admin team spoiled the faculty at each campus by serving up some pulled pork sandwiches, chips and cookies. It was just what we needed to kick off the last week of the grading period.
Red Ribbon Week
Gunter students participated in the Red Ribbon campaign during the week of October 23rd. Days were designated for dressing up for each campus. We had "Twin Day" to team up against drugs, "Red Day" to make a promise to stay drug free, "Camo Day" to say you won't see me doing drugs, and "Spirit Day" to show we have too much spirit for drugs. Students at the middle school also showed off their artistic skills and created drug free pumpkins, posters and signs. GMS students also signed the poster as a pledge to remain drug free.
Everything we do to spread the message to stay away from drugs means nothing if they don't hear the same message at home. Schools celebrate RRW for one week out of the school year. It is our hope that you continually remind your children of the dangers related to drugs.

We had some adorable book character pumpkins hanging out in our hallways this month. Thank you to all of our GES families who participated in our October Family Engagement Project. Students and their families were asked to use their talent and skills to create a book character out of a pumpkin.
GES students voted on their favorite storybook pumpkin and we're excited to congratulate our winners:
- Grand Prize - Cristal Escalera with Unicorn from "How to Catch a Unicorn" pumpkin
- 2nd Place - Gavin Foster with Watermelon from "The Inflatables"
- 3rd Place - Bodhi Tobkin with Pug from the book "Pig the Pug"
Thank you to all our students and families who participated. You brought such joy to our hallways with your creations.
Throughout the year, GES student groups will be hosting campus wide service projects called Tigers Helping Tigers. These service projects will benefit Gunter and the surrounding areas. Tigers Helping Tigers will demonstrate kindness, compassion and a servant minded heart to help others.
October’s service project was led by our 4th grade students and benefited the Sherman Animal Shelter. They collected supplies such as: puppy pads, newspaper, metal bowls for food & water, cat & dog toys, blankets & sheets, dog & cat treats, canned cat food, and corrugated cardboard cat scratch pads.Thank you for your support!

GES Classroom Fun... I mean Learning :)
- Mrs. Harper and Mrs. Pelzel got their math students up out of their seats to try a new way of learning math.
- Mrs. Walden set up a movement scene with the students watching a roller coaster and moving like they were riding it.
- Mrs. Pelzel used cups and strings to create sound waves through a "telephone" line.
- Mrs. Fieszel's students learned about numbers and letters and had to find the missing numbers and match the letters.
- Just in time for Halloween, Mrs. Harper and Mrs. Pelzel’s science classes combined forces for a Halloween themed STEM Friday. They were tasked to build the longest bone bridge that was elevated off the ground.
- Kindergartners spent some time learning about community helpers. One very important community helper actually came for a visit! Firefighter Ulch came to talk to the students about fire safety. Karson Ulch is a kindergartner in Mrs. Vest’s class, and loved having his dad come talk to his classmates. Everyone learned so much!

Points of Interest at GMS
- The 5th grade is gearing up for the Academic UIL season. We are proud of the students who tried out for each event! Keep an eye on our website and social media for more information!
- The GMS STUCO held their first meeting and are getting prepared for some upcoming events. Announcements for the Fall and Spring dances will be coming soon. Stay tuned!
This past summer, Holly Hoel, our GMS library aide participated in a book study about providing more access to books. She used that book study as inspiration to create a Little Free Library Box that now stands outside the campus.
Mrs. Hoel's inspiration came to life with the help of her husband, Matt Hoel, who loves woodworking and liked the challenge of the project.
When asked if she noticed it being used, Mrs. Hoel said, " I know it's being used as more books do get added occasionally." She added, "I had 2 - 6th grade boys looking for the same book at the same time. I had one copy in the middle school library and luckily we found another copy in the free library and they were able to read at the same time."
What is it? A little free library is basically a sharing box where anyone may take a book or share a book. It functions on the honor system and you don't have to share a book to take one! If you have books you would like to place in the sharing library, please be sure they are kid friendly, and not adult level books.
We, as a district, would like to thank Holly for bringing her inspiration to life! Our kids are definitely benefiting from it.

Book Fair Thank You!
A huge thank you to all our wonderful students, parents, and volunteers who made our Fall Scholastic Book Fair a tremendous success ! A special thank you to our PTO volunteers who helped with the Book Fair; without their assistance the fair would not run smoothly. Sales from the Middle School Fair totaled $4,786.77 and with a cash profit of $1,094.58 which will be used to buy new books for our middle school library.
Again, Thank you for your help and support.
October was National Bullying Awareness Month. The GMS Leadership classes worked to spread awareness by creating posters that were displayed throughout the school. The classes also shared facts about bullying through morning announcements. They created a week of dress up days so everyone could participate and show their support. The classes designed banners for each grade level that students signed as a pledge to take a stand against bullying.
Please help us instill kindness by talking with your children about bullying.
In the GMS classrooms...
5th grade Gifted and Talented students in Mrs. Jordan's class tested out a student’s research project, Aerodynamics of Paper Airplanes. They had a blast measuring and determining the best designed airplane!
Mrs. Loewen’s class and the 5th grade students had a blast during FAT BEAR WEEK 2023! Students followed some bears on explore.com who had video cams set up. Bear pictures were posted to show how much weight they were gaining for hibernation. Students voted each school day until the FAT BEAR WEEK 2023 Champion was crowned! #128 Grazer was crowned champion after winning the vote for the fattest bear on Fat Bear Tuesday! Students from Mrs. Loewen’s class celebrated the winner with Mrs. Bon, who championed Grazer during the entire competition, by presenting pictures they colored for her. Congratulations to Grazer for packing on those pounds!
8th grade scientists in Mr. Fletcher's class combined chemistry and fashion! They finished up the chemistry unit and in order to learn about bonding, the students completed an element t-shirt with correct Bohr model, valence electrons, and uses for that element. They look great!
7th grade scientists in Mr. Fletcher's class completed a unit on organic molecules and reported on their uses in everyday life.
6th grade scientists in Mrs. Morrison's lab tested minerals’ physical properties to try and identify unknown minerals. Some of the properties that students tested and observed were color, luster, hardness, streak, and magnetism. The students then used a mineral identification chart to compare the properties in order to identify their minerals. We might have some future mineralogists!
Sixth graders in Mrs. Morrison's room kicked off their Force and Motion unit by creating “spool racers” to demonstrate potential and kinetic energy. They learned how potential elastic energy is transformed to kinetic energy and raced each other to the finish line.
Ms.Loewen's class along with Mrs. Riley, Ms. Terri, and parent helper, Quinn Nichols, enjoyed a beautiful morning at the Preston Trails Pumpkin Patch after studying pumpkins, their life cycle and the pumpkin parts. They enjoyed feeding the animals, the hay maze, hay ride, and the pumpkin patch itself! The most fun was picking out a pumpkin to take home!
5th Grade Vocabulary Parade
5th grade students (and teachers) selected a word and created a parade entry for it. They had to define their word on a poster and also dress in costume to depict the word. We had so many words floating around the hallway, we felt like we were wandering through Webster's Dictionary!

Student Highlight: Zoe Ralston, Violist
Her story began in McKinney, but we are so proud to have her as a Gunter Tiger! Zoe Ralston has been playing the viola for six years and the success that she has had will carry far into her future. Her love for playing began in a McKinney middle school and continued with the high school orchestra in the McKinney district until her family made the move to Gunter last year. Although we don't have an orchestra in our district, Zoe found a way to hold on to her passion by playing with the Arco Bello Youth Orchestra in Sherman.
Zoe competed against 83 other Violists in the TMEA (Texas Music Educators Association) competition on October 21st. Her competitors were mainly from 6A schools with established orchestras, such as Allen ISD, Plano ISD, and Frisco ISD. TMEA competition operates on a blind audition system. Students are kept behind a curtain until they are called upon to play a portion of a song selected by the judges. Zoe was asked to play three times. In the end, she was the only one selected from a 3A school to advance to Regionals. This marks the 3rd time she has advanced!
Congratulations, Zoe! Your story is an inspiration and we hope you continue playing your viola for a long time.
The freshmen class at GHS recently completed the Youth Aware of Mental Health (YAM) program administered through an agreement with UT Southwestern Medical Center. The purpose of this program is to destigmatize mental health and to provide students with tools and resources to find help for themselves and to support their friends. This program was conducted in five 45 minute classroom sessions facilitated by an instructor from UT Southwestern. In YAM, student voices take center stage.
Young people are listened to and their experiences are valued and drive the classroom exercises.
Everyone present works to understand different perspectives and come up with possible solutions to problems. Students are invited to role-play and discuss everyday situations that are important to them. The topics range from relationships with peers and adults, changes in mood, to feeling sad or facing a stressful situation. As a group, the students reflect on how they might feel if faced by such events and discuss how to handle challenging real-life situations. Emphasis is placed on peer support and information is given on how and where to find professional help if needed. YAM invites young people to reflect on their emotions and to consider different approaches when faced with life challenges or mental health concerns. By participating in an inclusive and youth-led dialogue about mental health, YAM helps grow solidarity among young people. Participation in YAM also has long-term benefits. After YAM, young people often say that they feel more confident in supporting a friend in need. Students will reference strategies they learned in YAM that they used in difficult real life situations. Perhaps most importantly, students recognize the need for support as they encounter life challenges.
In the GHS classrooms...
(left) Mr. Eaton's STEM Class has been working with VEX Robotics kits, learning engineering and coding skills along the way. Their latest challenge was Tug-of-War, where they were to increase the pulling power of their robots by adding a gear train and learn to code different speeds for the motors.
(right) Mr. Eaton's calculus students were caught Defining the Derivative in Limit Form, looking for mathematical patterns, and showcasing their knowledge to their classmates in a gallery walk.
Mrs. Thornhill's Health Science classes had to untie themselves from a human knot using communication skills. The students are learning the importance of good communication in the health care industry.
Outdoor Education students in Coach Applewhite's class welcomed the game warden to speak to them about the laws, regulations, and requirements of being a game warden. On another day, they spent some time in the basics of grilling. They each brought in their own choice of meat, seasoned it and watched it as it cooked on the grill. We know the importance of properly grilled food... not only should it taste good, it should be thoroughly cooked. Daily living skills for the win!
Students in Mrs. Harlin's Pre-Calculus course worked with sine waves, a trigonometric function. The students are learning how they have multiple applications in "real life" and have created several graphs. On this particular morning, however, their sine wave was built out of Gummy Bears! Students in another class built a Gummy Worm sine wave, and then the two classes compared and contrasted the two.
Mrs. Booth’s Spanish 1 classes participated in a walk around activity using analog clocks! Students teamed up to determine the time at each station and write down their findings in Spanish.
Organizations
HOSA
HOSA members spent several Thursday and Friday mornings during the month of October selling items to raise money and spread awareness about breast cancer. Everyone was so supportive of their sales, they closed up shop a week early because they ran out of supplies. Thank you to everyone who helped them in this campaign. Money raised went directly to Women Rock.

ART
GHS Art students have been learning strategies to practice arranging visual elements and expressing mixed media in their work. In the photos below, students used layers of paint, collage, and drawing and identified a descriptive word that it expressed. To finish up, they added to one another’s work by drawing, or writing a haiku about the expression. Dreamy, whimsical, tired, energetic, vague, and ethereal were a few of the words.
GMS Art students studied Victorian architecture and designed some pretty great haunted houses!

Save the Date
The Gunter High School NHS Chapter has begun their annual Crisis Center Drive, and we need your help! The drive will take place until December 8th, but please don't wait until the last minute to help us fill our boxes. The center helps find housing and then provides people who are victims of Domestic Violence or Sexual Assault with the basic household needs, and is dedicated to providing a safe haven, crisis intervention and comprehensive support services to victims of family violence and sexual assault To make these goals a reality, the Crisis Center relies solely on donations from the community to provide a free-of-cost safe haven for victims. Here at Gunter High School, we have had a long-standing tradition of providing a large load of donations to the crisis center, and we need your help to CONTINUE OUR TRADITION! There are two ways you can help: 1. Scan the QR code or click here: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/TT4UHQT1RMSA... to see the “wish list” of NEW items they need most. You can purchase it right there on Amazon. 2. Purchase a new item and deliver it to the high school. Students are collecting items in their 3rd period classes.
