ECISD AVID in Action
March 2015 Edition
AVID at Hays to include K-3
AVID Elementary students learn about finances
After each lesson, the students are given an extension activity. They are to complete an optional AVID one-pager that relates to the lessons learned from the book. A set of books is given to each teacher to build their financial literacy library and so the students can use them to complete this activity. The AVID one-pagers that are submitted will be judged for a chance to win a Kindle provided by CCFCU.
Featured WICOR Strategy - Strategies For ALL Students
Inquiry - Philosophical Chairs
Philosophical Chairs is a strategy for exploring a controversial topic through student discussion and questioning. It is not a debate, but rather an opportunity for students to defend, deepen, and fine-tune their ideas through discussion. Students should be taught to respond to the ideas of their classmates in a respectful and appropriate way, using phrases like, “I agree with you that…. However….”
Philosophical Chairs can be used across all grade levels. The format remains the same from grade to grade so differentiation is done by choosing central statements
or topics with increased complexity and by decreasing the level of teacher
involvement in the process.
