Symptoms of Polydactylism

People that are born with one or more fingers or toes. The extra digit may be : A small, raised bump or a piece of skin that looks like a small finger or toe that isn't fully formed.

Treatment

One hundred thirteen hands exhibiting thumb polydactyly were treated and followed up for an average of 49 months.

Long/Short term effects

Polydactyly can sometimes be detected by prenatal ultrasound, and is apparent at birth; the underlying structure of the finger and the course for treatment are determined with x-ray

Causes

Polydactylism occurs when the body follows a different set of directions than usual while forming the hands or feet during development. Researchers are still learning about all the genes that cause extra digits
