THE ICE STORM THAT WASN'T
Last weekend's ice storm, aka Winter Storm Jupiter, was a devastating blow to many states, but as big as the ice storm was, nothing came to Plattsburg. For four days, all around Missouri, the news media continued to talk about about getting ready for the ice storm of the century. We all kept waiting, but nothing happened! In Missouri, forecasters called for 1-2 inches of ice on the ground, but the state actually got a quarter of an inch in just a few areas. Some roads were slick across the state and there were a few accidents, but nothing happened here!
How did the over-reaction of the news media affect our region? When news reporters urged everyone to stay on high alert, people rushed to buy food and stock up. This was a perk for grocery stores. Even though a few places benefitted from this storm alert, many places did not. For stores that aren't selling groceries, gas, shovels, clothes or boots, big storms can be a business killer. The impact on restaurants, small businesses, and other companies that provide non-essentials is devastating.
When a storm is approaching, it is important for the public to know. Over-exaggerating, though, can have a very negative impact. Hopefully next time the weather reporters will get it right!

Why do we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day?
By: Bradley Dunivan
Soon after his assassination, a campaign started to make Martin Luther King Jr. Day a national holiday. In 1983, Martin Luther King Jr. Day was signed into law by Ronald Reagan and three years later the first Martin Luther King Jr. Day was celebrated.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day isn't just a day out of school or a day off work. It is a day to reflect on racism in our country. While we have come a long way, there is still much more to be done.

WILL BOYS BASKETBALL WIN CONFERENCE?
PLATTSBURG ILLUSTRATED
By: Andrew Wilson
The Plattsburg boys basketball team is clicking well this year. Guard, Tanner Sims, and small forward, Jordan Kremer, have a shooting game that is on fire. The team record as of right now is (10-7), but with a second place win in Lathrop’s Bill Burns Classic, the team’s morale is through the roof. I had a chance to sit down with Senior, Tanner Sims, and ask him his thoughts on the rest of the season.
“This year we are bonding very well which is an advantage for the team and our gameplay. With this momentum, the team will have a good shot at conference and districts.”
This team has many players ready to jump right in and there is great talent well past the starting line up. This team looks like quite a contender moving forward.
I also had the chance to sit down with two Sophomore players, Jake Turley and Garrett Stephens, who are both on the basketball team. I asked them their general view of this years’ team.
Jake stated, “The team's number one problem is letting the opposition score too many points, which could be stopped, if we focused on defense.” Garrett Stephens agreed and that is what they are now focusing on.
I’d like to say good luck to the Plattsburg boys and girls basketball teams in the rest of their season. I think conference is in our future!
