Mrs. Greene's 3rd Grade
March 5, 2018
A Great Week!
We survived ISTEP 2018! I was very proud of the efforts of all of my students. A few students worked the entire time on each of the three different tests...never put their pencil down until they heard me say the word STOP! Ella, Addi, Saryu, Griffin! Most students finish a few minutes early, but I tell the students that since this is the one chance to SHOW WHAT YOU KNOW, why not work until the last possible minute? Those four students took me seriously!
All Third Graders in the state of Indiana are required to take the iREADS test. That test will be given the week of March 12. There is a day of practice tests (required by the state) and one day of the actual test. I will let you know the specific days/times next week.
Next week all third graders will be invited to participate in the March Madness Reading Challenge. Look for a permission slip to come home Monday, March 5.
We got a new seating chart today. We also spent time cleaning our desks out. It's nice to feel organized!

Things I saw happen in Room 9 this week...
- Yuvani is flying through many different books. Her reading stamina and interest in reading have grown tremendously!
- Natalie was a trooper this week! She received an injury to her eye during swim practice. She missed a day of school (ISTEP testing day), but came back the next day with her bandaged eye and gave it her all!
- Cole successfully led the class in arranging our seats into new teams. His leadership skills kicked into high gear!
- Kaeleb has had such a positive attitude when working one-on-one with a teacher during writing. Writing is not his favorite thing to do, but his positive attitude is sure making a difference in the growth I am seeing!
- Riya and Saryu are working together during SSL time learning about an Indian tradition. They are working hard and learning a lot. I can't wait to learn more about this!
These are just a few of the MANY things I observed! Stay tuned for more...
Looking forward to a GREAT week next week!
Enjoy your weekend...

Around Room 9...
This is the students' favorite spot in the classroom...The TREAT DRAWER! There are many different times throughout the day/week that students receive treats. They are even allowed to use DOJO Points to purchase treats. If you ever have leftover treats at your house, feel free to send them our way. We will put them to great use!
Special Helper - Shota
Shota LOVED being in charge this week! He is a sweet boy who loves to have fun (you can see this by looking at his first day of school picture below), but is a serious student when he needs to be. We have enjoyed learning about him, his culture, and the things he enjoys. He is a GREAT addition to our classroom!
Here is What is Planned for Next Week: March 5-9
Reading: Reading to Learn: Understanding NON-FICTION text
- Using BOXES and BULLETS to help us organize main idea/details in a text.
- We will practice using boxes and bullets to help us write summaries of non-fiction texts.
Writing: YOU CHOOSE!
- We finished our Persuasive Writing pieces. I will grade those over the weekend and return them to the students next week. Check your child's Data Binder for the essays and the rubric I used to grade them.
- We have two weeks left in this grading period. To finish it out, the students will choose to write a published narrative, persuasive, or information piece. They will turn it in on March 16. We will use our writing time each day conferring and giving students help as needed. I will remind students to stay focused and work hard knowing they have a due date of two weeks. Please check in with your child on this project.
