VOGELTOWN SCHOOL - THE 'VS' WAY

Our Mission: Manaaki whenua, Manaaki tangata, Haere Whakamua

Care for the land, Care for the people, Go Forward

Our Values: I.R.O.C.K

Inclusive, Respectful, Original, Courageous, Kind

Whakauru, Whakaute, Tipu, Kaha, Atawhai

Big picture

SCHOOL VALUE THIS TERM: 'TO BE RESPECTFUL'

Our 5 school values are I.R.O.C.K.

These are for our Vogeltown learners to be:

Inclusive (Whakaru), Respectful (Whakaute), Original (Tipu), Courageous (Kaha) and Kind (Atawhai).

These values were chosen by the staff, learners and community of Vogeltown School in 2019.

This term we are focusing on being 'Respectful'.

To be respectful we want our learners to greet people in a friendly manner, listen to others when they speak, share and take turns, work with others in work and play, keep our hands and feet to ourselves and say kind and encouraging things!

SCHOOL GOAL: 'CARE FOR THE PEOPLE, SHOWING KINDNESS'

WHAT:

To help ensure that everyone enjoys the end of the year, 2020!

WHY:

So we can all enjoy the end of 2020 in a fun, exciting and celebratory way

For the Year 6 students to enjoy their last days at VS in a positive and fun way

Realising how your actions can have a positive (or negative) impact on others

So we can all end the year in a happy and positive way! (The VS way!)

SIGNS OF SUCCESS:

Not blaming others for your mistakes – learn from them

Being honest and responsible

Being accountable for your own actions

We all end the year happy, positive and ready for a holiday to refresh!

KIA ORA VS WHANAU, FROM MR O

Kia ora koutou to our Vogeltown whanau, welcome to the end of Week 8, Term 4. We have had the most awesome end to the week - the Vogeltown hangi!

A massive thanks to everyone who donated items for the hangi, we certainly had heaps of food for our community! A massive thanks to our team of helpers - including Matua Dave Hare and Matua Paul Horo, who were here at 4am this morning to help the Paetoki team light the fire and heat up the rocks.

Today we also held our Vogeltown whanau hui with our Kapahaka Roopu doing their last performance of the year - and they were amazing! Thanks to everyone who came and celebrated their awesome performance and topping off a great year! A massive thanks again to Whaea Raewyn and Ms Pretty for their dedication to this amazing group - Tu Meke team!

We have a new school goal for these last couple of weeks - to 'Care for the people (manaaki tangata) by showing kindness'. It was great to see this happening today with our tired Year 6 learners, helping each other, helping the teachers and helping our junior kids! Well done team!

We will be pushing this goal over the last week and a half!

We want these last 8 days of school to be fun and to give our Year 6 kids a great send off as they finish their time at Vogeltown School. We have some fun activities planned for next week - please see the syndicate notices below that detail what is happening for each team next week - these also came home on Seesaw this week.

Dates to look out for the last 2 weeks of the year:

Covid Level 1 Information for Vogeltown School

At Vogeltown School:

  • There will be no more signage displayed around the school sites

  • Parents/caregivers are welcome on site. You do not need to ring before coming on school sites. Although we are still encouraging the morning ‘drop offs’ at the gates.

  • After 3pm parents/caregivers and kids are allowed on the school sites. Please be aware however that our staff are still working after 3pm to get programmes ready for the next day in their rooms - they need this time for preparation.

  • We will open the drinking fountains on both school sites. Learners can still bring drink bottles if they so wish.

  • We will still ask that if your child is sick to please keep them home. As you know staying at home if you’re sick is especially important at Alert Level 1. The risk of COVID-19 being spread in the community is much greater when there are no restrictions on gatherings or going out.

  • If your child has cold or flu symptoms you should call your doctor or Healthline on 0800 358 5453 for advice about getting tested. If recommended to get tested, you should do so.

For our Vogeltown community:

  • COVID-19 is contained at Alert Level 1, but it’s still worthwhile to keep a safe distance from people you don’t know while out and about. This will help to minimise the spread of COVID-19 if community transmission returns.

  • For air travel you are not required to wear a face covering, (if not travelling to, through or from Auckland), but you are encouraged to do so for your safety and the safety of those around you. Consider doing the same for all inter-regional travel.

  • Scan into places through the NZ COVID Tracer app or keep a good record of where you have been, to support speedy contact tracing.

  • We will still have our ‘contact tracing QR code’ posters up at our classroom doors and office doors.

  • There are no restrictions on numbers at gatherings. Schools, like workplaces, are not considered to be gatherings. Physical activities including cultural and sporting activities, practices and events can go ahead

  • There are no restrictions on domestic travel. People should avoid using mass transport if sick, awaiting a result from a COVID-19 test or required/recommended to self-isolate.

CONGRATULATIONS!

A massive congratulations to Miss Bleasdale and her partner Sam who got engaged last weekend! It has been a big year for Miss Bleasdale who has bought a house, got engaged and about to get a dog! Ka Rawe, Jillian!

END OF YEAR - YEAR 6 CELEBRATIONS

As with every year, it is a bit of a sad time when we begin to plan and organise the end of year celebrations for our Year 6 students. This year is no different. Our Year 6 students have been amazing role models to all of our younger kids and it is sad to see them move on to their next school.

This year we have changed things a little bit. We are having two celebration assemblies for the Year 6 cohort.

On Monday 14th December, we will be having a Year 6 Leavers lunch. This is only for our students and will involve the Year 5 students serving the Year 6 students and some ex-Vogeltown students coming back and talking to our Year 6's about their time after Vogeltown.

Then, on Tuesday 15th December, we will be having our Year 6 Leavers Assembly. This begins at 5:30pm in the school hall and all whanau of our Year 6 students are invited. It is an amazing night and will not involve a tea like we have done in previous years.

It would be great to see all our Year 6 students and whanau on this night.

LIBRARY BOOKS

It's that time of year when we need all our library books returned. Our library is an amazing resource but we are still missing a lot of books which have not been returned. Can you please have a good look around at home for any books that are outstanding and bring them back next week. We would much rather have books returned than send out invoices. Thanks whanau!

VOGELTOWN LEARNERS ZONE

Check out these awesome 'Monorhyme' poems from Rm 11. Monorhyme poems are a passage, stanza, or entire poem in which all lines have the same end rhyme.

Harper Is Crazy

Harper likes to skate

He is one of my mates

He opens the school gate

But is often late

Then he suddenly deflates

And loses a lot of weight

When he tries to communicate

He vibrates then recreates

Then he destroys my license plate

And gets a lot of hate

So he breaks glass plates

Gee, what a mate!

OUCH MY LIP

I like to do flips

So I got told to do a cool trick

So I did a crazy backflip

And everyone said what a cool trick

Then I smashed my bottom lip

And ended up in starship

With a fat lip that was chipped

I skipped to a spaceship

To do another crazy trick

Without hurting my lip

But ended up splitting my top lip

So I failed my trick

And rested my lips in chip dip.

The Bait

I ate fishing bait

And it was very great

But then I gained weight

I did hate,

I found a crate

and climbed over a gate

I saw a kid called Nate

Who liked to skate,

Nate had a crush on Kate,

So they had a date

And it went great.

MODEL MAKING CLUB

Tu Meke kids - awesome models!

SCHOOL POOL 2021

Our school pool will open to all swimming in Term 1 of 2021. We will not be having it open over the Xmas break for whanau. However, we will open it for whanau and sell keys to use the pool in the weekends during Term 1 if we can get a pool committee together.

Anyone who offers to be on the pool committee will be trained on how to check the chemical balance of the pool and be given a key for free. The keys for a term cost $45 with $5 given back at the end of the season when the key is returned. The pool chemical balance has to be checked 3 times per day. It will only need to be checked in the weekends.

If you are keen to help us out, please drop me an email and we can get this organised, timetabled and confirm some training with Mr McAuley at the beginning of Term 1.

SPORTS NEWS

Term 4 Sports

As the term is coming to an end, so are our Term 4 sports. Firstly I would like to say a huge THANK YOU to all our helpers, from the coaches who give up their time week in week out, to the parents who get their children where they need to go each week, and of course everyone in between! I hope all the children have enjoyed their sport even though the weather hasn’t always played ball!!

A special mention to our Intro to Incrediball Div 2 cricket team who finished 1st equal in their pool but narrowly missed out on making it to the final on count-back. Best of luck for your game tonight…still a chance to bring home the bronze!! Go the Vogeltown Volts!!

Also being the last week of games can everyone please remember to take a spare top to your last game so that you can hand in your playing top to your coach. It really is a great help to me if the gear bags can be returned with all of the tops included as a complete set. Thanks in advance for your help with this.
