Principal's Message
In the month of February we have many exciting events that students will recognize in their classrooms, such as: 100th Day, Black History Month, Lunar New Year, Presidents' Day and much more! Please share your photos here.
I want to thank PTA for helping us purchase new fully stocked emergency backpacks for our classrooms. If you have not joined PTA, it is not too late, scan the code on the bottom of the newsletter to join. Our next meeting is on Tuesday, February 9th.
On February 23rd our Counselor, Ms. Huang, will be holding a parenting workshop on Motivating Students during Remote Learning. We know this time has been difficult on us all and as time goes by we are finding more and more students having difficulty with staying motivated.
March 20th is the Niles Rotary sponsored virtual fundraiser for Harvey Green. This is a free event that we hope to have as many of our families attend as possible. Please see the flyer below to register for this event.
Superintendent Cammack recently sent out a newsletter where he is asking for parents to complete a survey and to give feedback on the COVID-19 Safety Plan. Please be sure to complete these by Wednesday, February 10th.

Attendance
If your student is going to be absent from their online live meetings, you must notify the school office by 9:30 am on the day of the absence. You can call the school at (510) 656- 6438, and press 7 which is the attendance mail box. Slowly and clearly spell your child's first and last name, room number or teacher and the reason for the absence. The mail box is accessible 24 hours a day. You may also contact the office directly by email at vluna@fusdk12.net. If the school does not receive a call then the absence will be recorded as an unexcused absence.
Rotary Spring Fling Fundraiser
The Niles Rotary Club of Fremont will host a FREE "Spring Fling" virtual fundraising event to benefit three local elementary schools, including ours! Funds raised will be used to purchase new Chromebooks for students.
The "Spring Fling" fundraiser will have a fun "Laugh In" theme and will take place online on Saturday, March 20, 2021, from 6:30-7:30 pm. The FREE one-hour event will include entertainment, silent and live auctions, and so much more. The total fundraising goal is $60,000 which will be disbursed between the following elementary schools: Azevada, Harvey Green, and Oliveira.
To ensure fundraising success, I ask that you support this effort in any way you can. I suggest you attend the event and, if you're able, donate a silent auction item, sponsor the event, or donate funds. Full details on ways you can support this fundraiser are at www.fremontspringfling.com.

ELPAC
The Summative English Language Proficiency Assessments for California, or “Summative ELPAC,” is the test used to measure how well students understand English when it is not the language they speak at home. Information from the ELPAC tells your child’s teacher about the areas in which your child needs extra support.
This spring, your child will take the Summative ELPAC.
Students in kindergarten through grade twelve who are classified as English learners will take the Summative ELPAC every year until they are reclassified as proficient in English. Students are tested on their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Your child’s voice is being recorded as part of the Speaking test. A small percentage of student responses will be used to validate the accuracy of scoring and will not be used for identification. All recorded responses will be destroyed after the scores are validated.
You are an important part of your child’s education. To help your child get ready for the test, you can:
∙ Read to your child, or have them read to you on a regular basis.
∙ Use pictures and ask your child to tell you what they see, or what is happening in each picture.
∙ Provide your child with opportunities to use language outside of school.
∙ Talk with your child’s teacher about your child’s listening, speaking, reading and writing skills to help support their progress.
To learn more about the ELPAC, go to the California Department of Education Parent Guides to Understanding Web page at https://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/parentguidetounderstand.asp
You also can look at sample test questions on the practice tests, which can be found on the ELPAC Web site at https://www.elpac.org/resources/practicetests/.
If you have any questions about your child taking the ELPAC, please contact: Ms. Johnson, Green Principal at tjohnson@fusdk12.net
Counselor's Corner with Ms. Huang
Hello Green Families,
Thanks for tuning in! This month's focus is to show love. As parents, I know you all are very busy and stressed but it is so important not to forget to show affection to your child(ren). When there are a million things running around in our minds, it's easy for this to fall to the bottom of the list. This month, I hope you can shift your attention to actively show love and create more connection with your child(ren). Sometimes, all kids really want is to know their grown-ups care, love, and value them. Here are some fun ideas to get you started, hopefully you can find at least one to try!
Kindest regards,
Ms. Huang
Library News
I'm excited to introduce Junior Library Guild Digital. This is an eBook subscription. Thanks to Harvey Green PTA, I got a discount on this service (because I have JLG Print Book Subscriptions funded by our wonderful PTA).
Here's how your child can read eBooks from JLG.
Go to JLG Digital.
They'll put new eBooks every 30 - 90 days.
They do not need to sign in to read these eBooks. By signing in, they can make notes, bookmarks, or highlights in the books. Also, I might purchase single-user eBooks in the future if the titles are popular. They'll need to sign in to read those eBooks.
To sign in:
Username: [first 3 letters of first name][first 3 letters of last name][last 3 digits of student ID]
Password: [whole student ID]
Example
John Smith (ID: 42875)
Username: johsmi875
Password: 42875
This is the same as they login to Destiny to read eBooks from Harvey Green Library or request/hold books for checkouts, so they should be familiar with it.
If you don't know the student ID, it's on the report card. Or you can ask your teacher.
