A NOTE FROM DR HITCHMAN...
As we enter the month of October and week four of distance learning, I want to thank our students, parents, and staff for their continued cooperation, flexibility, and communication during our unprecedented journey so far this year. While we knew the start of the school year this fall would look different than it did this past spring, the difference is substantial. Staff members, families, and students continue to adjust to distance learning and seek a balance between how much schoolwork is too little and too much. As your principal, please know I hear your concerns and continue to communicate with all stakeholders regarding assignments and assessments in a virtual learning environment. I continue to ask you to reach out to myself, but also to your child’s school counselor, assistant principal, and teachers regarding your concerns. Together we can move forward in a manner that prepares our students for the rigors of current and future classes while also taking care of social, emotional, and mental needs.
Whether looking at a computer screen or participating in an all-day training, sitting is exhausting! After staring at a computer screen for four hours, the last thing I want to do is stare at a computer screen for another four hours. While AP and dual enrollment classes require more homework due to the nature of their curriculum and assessments, students do need to have time during the day to unplug and engage in something they enjoy doing. In our current distance learning model, Mondays are designated for asynchronous work and also provide an opportunity for students to meet with teachers. Unless a student is taking an AP or dual enrollment class, they should not be spending more than 5 hours completing homework on a Monday.
In school years past, it was natural for students to feel a little bit of angst as they adjusted to their new classes at the start of the year. This year is different due to the nature of student assignments in distance learning and lack of interaction between students and their peers as well as students and their teachers. While it seems like the school year has just begun, we are currently at the midpoint of the 1st quarter and when our November monthly newsletter is sent, we will be starting the 2nd quarter. (We did lose six days of instruction when our first day moved to the Tuesday after Labor Day.) In last week’s ConnectEd message, I asked you to reach out and let me know how the school year is going. Please continue to do so. This is a new experience for all of us and every comment is an opportunity for growth, improvement, and recognition. At the end of the day, we all want what is in the best interest of our students. Thank you for keeping the lines of communication open. Together, we light the way and thank you for taking the time to read our October newsletter.
Sincerely,
Dr. Ryan Hitchman

THE SEASONS ARE CHANGING...
“Falling back” means getting an extra hour. It also means spending a lot more of the day in darkness. This is a risk factor for depression in people with seasonal affective disorder. Research is increasingly uncovering ways that Daylight Savings Time affects physical and mental health. Adequate vitamin D intake, which we get from sunlight, is key for many basic bodily processes, and vitamin D insufficiency has been linked to depression.
With more of us spending time indoors due to the pandemic, self-care is even more important. Some strategies that can help you make it through the cold months:
- Making a list of priorities for the season. Don’t give into pressure. Do the things you really enjoy and forget about the rest.
- Getting access to plenty of natural light by spending some time outside or sitting under a sun lamp (search light therapy on Amazon).
- Maintaining a regular schedule, even when cold temperatures tempt you to sleep in.
- Maintaining family traditions or making some new ones.
- Taking care of your body. Exercise at least 30 minutes a day, at least five days per week. Eat plenty of healthy foods and get enough sleep.
Even if every seasonal change in years past has been difficult for you, this one can be better. Virginia is beautiful in the fall! Get out with your family and enjoy it! Here are some great ideas.
Christi Campbell, Director of School Counseling
WE NEED YOU!!!
The Office of School Counseling is looking for student and parent volunteers to serve on our School Counseling Advisory Council at Lightridge High School. An advisory council is a
representative group of stakeholders selected to review and advise on the implementation of the school counseling program.
In order to enable our initiatives to reflect the perspectives of our entire school and community, we are asking for 2-3 parents from each grade level and 2-3 students from each grade level. Your involvement, will ensure that the entire school and community have a voice as we build a data-driven comprehensive school counseling program.
The time commitment from you is minimal. We ask that you serve a two year term and attend meetings twice a school year - once in the fall and once in the spring. We look forward to establishing this partnership with you to advocate for our students and engage them in their future. If you are interested, please contact Jennifer Schrader at Jennifer.Schrader@lcps.org.
As part of our data collection, we have put together the following brief parent survey. We ask that all parents please take a moment to fill it out. THANK YOU!

Basic membership requirements include (1) successful completion of Algebra I and Geometry and current enrollment in Algebra II or higher; (2) a GPA of 3.0 or above in high school math courses completed (B average or higher).

DEADLINE - October 9th at 4pm
PSAT TEST FOR JUNIORS ONLY
Lightridge High School will offer current juniors the opportunity to take the College Board’s PSAT NMSQT test on October 14 and October 29 at the high school.
- There is no fee and no registration required for the test.
- Test administration will be capped at 100 students per test date.
- Transportation will be provided for students who indicate the need. Please complete the form no later than October 4th so that busses can be scheduled.

Test Day Procedures
Students will arrive between 8:15 and 8:30 and enter through the main entrance or the bus entrance. Masks will be required the entire time they are on school property.
Upon arrival, students will line up in 6’ Socially Distanced Lines for Photo-ID Check-in. Health Questionnaires will be sent electronically to all students prior to test day and results verified when students check in. If the health questionnaire data is in order, students will move on to Temperature Screenings. For those who did not complete the online form, we will have paper copies.
Based on results of the temperature screening, students will either be directed to the cafe for testing or to Room 1401 for temperature retake.
Students who fail the Health Screening will be sent home if they drove to school, or sent to one of the COVID Cares rooms (1602 & 1606) until they can be picked up.
Once students pass the health screening, they will move towards the Cafe.
Students will remain in 6’ Socially Distanced Lines for an additional Check-in and seat assignment.
Students are encouraged to leave all electronics at home or in their vehicles. Otherwise, they will be required to turn off and leave everything except calculators outside the testing area to be overseen by hallway monitors.
We plan to start testing at 9:15am and anticipate finishing by 1:00pm.
Students who wish to be considered for the National Merit Scholarship Competition, but who do not wish to take the PSAT NMSQT may find application information here.

AP EXAMS
Dear Parents and Guardians:
We are pleased that your student has chosen to take an Advanced Placement (AP) course this year and want to assist you in planning for the AP exam, which will be administered this spring. Please review the following information carefully.
Students, parents, or guardians are responsible for the cost of the AP exam. Each exam is $86.00, with the exception of AP Seminar and AP Research, which are $134. Each school’s on-line payment portal will open on September 17, 2020 and close on November 6, 2020 at 5:00 PM. Within the portal, students will need to select the name of the AP test(s) they wish to take. Please contact your student’s school to discuss the process for accepting cash or check payments.
Students who register for an AP exam after November 6, will be charged a $40.00 late fee, per late registration, in addition to the exam fee. Refunds will be provided to students who cancel their AP exam or fail to test. Requests for a refund should be emailed to the School Testing Coordinator.
If a family needs to arrange for a payment plan or anticipates difficulty in paying for the exam, the family should speak confidentially with the school Principal or School Testing Coordinator. If your child receives free or reduced lunch, AP exam fees are covered by LCPS, but your student must still complete the online registration for the exam(s).
The AP exam administration schedule is attached. Parents/guardians/students must provide their own transportation to the school on the day of testing. Please make every effort to schedule vacations, appointments, or other activities on dates that do not conflict with the testing dates. Make-up testing is permitted for verified emergencies only. Morning exams begin at 7:45 AM and afternoon exams begin at 12:15 PM, with exams lasting between 4-6 hours. Student may not be dismissed from an exam until all students have finished testing.
Additional information for parents and students can be accessed through the College Board’s site and the LCPS website.
Students must join their AP Classroom(s) online (Directions) and pay for their exam(s) through the Lightridge Online Payment Portal.
If you have Testing questions or concerns, please email Donna Draisey.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!
As our students have heard, Lightridge High School is committed to offering our students the "Lightning Lounge". A place where students can get a beverage and/or a snack, collaborate and chat with friends or study. Our desire is to have the lounge open to students before and after school and during study hall. Unfortunately, this effort is not funded by LCPS. Other schools in the area have built similar coffee lounges in the school and had it funded through private and corporate donations. Given COVID and the financial constraints felt by many small businesses, we have not wanted to reach out and ask for monetary donations. Instead, we have made a wish list of items through Amazon to be used to get our coffee shop off the ground. If you have the financial means, big or small, please consider making a purchase. If you order off of our Amazon Wish List, the items will be directly shipped to Lightridge High School. We would be happy to supply you with a letter of appreciation of your donation for your tax purposes. If you have any questions regarding this initiative, please reach out to Christi Campbell, Director of School Counseling.

SOCIETY OF WOMEN ENGINEERS AT UVA
The Society of Women Engineers at the University of Virginia invites high school juniors and seniors to apply to our Virtual High School Visitation program on Saturday, November 14th, 2020. The program gives young women a comprehensive look at engineering fields and UVA’s engineering curriculum through informative speakers and interactive design activities. The program is designed to benefit participants with all levels of engineering experience, but we particularly target those students who are not yet familiar with the field and may be interested in applying to engineering schools or pursuing a STEM career.
To apply, students should complete the HSV Fall 2020 Application which can be found here. This fall session particularly targets high school seniors, but sophomores and juniors can also apply. Students who have previously applied to HSV, are in the targeted grade level, and demonstrate a strong interest in engineering through their short answer question will receive priority acceptance.
The attached flier provides more information about the event and instructions on how to apply online through our website.
The application must be completed online by 11:59 pm on Sunday, October 25th, 2020.
