The Bear Necessities

Writing and Art Center(s)
Do you have materials available in your writing center that pull children in? New materials you introduce at circle? Do you model writing to meaning, talk about what you write down. Keep writing alive, even toddlers enjoy putting pen to paper and making their mark on the world!!
Notice the process, not just the product. As adults, we often tend to compliment children on their successes: What’s that a picture of? A house? That’s great! And sometimes we get hung up on the fact that trees should be green, not purple. Sometimes we quiz: What’s the name of that color? But children learn more when we don’t focus so much on what they are drawing, but on what they are thinking about their drawing. Take a few moments to observe your child’s work: Look at the lines you are making—there are so many of them! Or, That picture is really interesting. Those colors make me feel happy. Or, I see you are working really hard on your drawing. Or just: Tell me about your picture. Then see if your child is interested in sharing more.

Emergency Operations Team Meeting Notes to Staff
Doors are to remain locked with a magnet in place to allow staff access. Magnet is removed if you leave your room with the class. Magnet may also be removed if you have a runner who struggles with the door handle.
Key check in wall pockets. Cristi checked the meeting rooms - Teachers will check classrooms, please complete this task NOW and let Cristi know if your key is missing!!.
Regarding visitors entering through other doors (bus door, etc.). All visitors enter through front door. If you hold the door for someone out front, walk them to the front window and get a front office staff members attention.
Students are to be accompanied by an adult at all times. We are working on a lost child code and system. We will roll this out when we get the system defined. Any ideas are welcome!!
Staff at Bus Duty / Car Rider Duty, please be on time, that is in your position at 10 minutes till. If you are a classrooms with a teacher and a paraprofessional, ONE OF YOU should be in the hall greeting students and monitoring the hallway.
Bathroom Lock Down Thoughts
Some of you have asked to keep items like wasp spray, hairspray in your bathroom cabinets. If you have any toxic substance, we will need to place a cabinet lock on that cabinet. So I am not sure that this does not defeat the purpose.
Foster Students in class pictures
Apparently there was some concern shared by staff regarding this topic. Below is the official word on this topic.
Yes, they can be included in class photos. The state’s rules about children being photographed and having photos shared publicly stems from two things (that don’t fall under class photos) that the children cannot be publicly identified as foster children and there are policies about how/when children’s photos can be used to recruit an adoptive home for them.
