Greenfield School District
School Board Meeting Highlights
Our Mission Statement:
April 26, 2016
New Board Members Take Oath of Office
Newly elected school board members Robert Hansen, Julie DeGaro, Kristie Potter and Rick Moze were sworn-in during the meeting. Hansen, Potter and Moze are returning members, while DeGaro is new to the board. All four won their seats in the April election. Hansen and Moze will each serve a two-year term, while Potter and DeGaro were elected to serve three years. Ms. DeGaro replaces Jim Sabinash, who completed the term of Len Cich, who passed away last August.
In his parting remarks Sabinash thanked the board, reflecting on the incredible experience it had been to serve with them and encouraged the board to keep moving the district forward by staying true to its mission statement.
Herb Kohl Winners from GHS
The board recognized two of this year's recipients of the Herb Kohl Foundation Awards, including GHS science teacher, Wayne Merchle and GHS senior Adan Saavedra.
Merchle was one of 100 teachers statewide (32 from the CESA #1 area) to receive the Kohl Fellowship Award. Educators are chosen for their superior ability to inspire a love of learning in their students and ability to motivate others, and for their leadership and service within and outside the classroom.
Saavedra received a Herb Kohl Initiative Scholarship, which recognizes students who have demonstrated a high level of motivation to achieve, have shown strong promise for achieving success in college and beyond, and have overcome significant personal obstacles or adversity, but have not yet received other academic-based scholarships.
The two were given their awards at a luncheon hosted by Herb Kohl in April.

Overview of District Professional Learning Day
On April 22, thirty-six members of the Greenfield School District attended a Professional Learning Day held at Alverno College. Administrators, Professional Educators, Paraprofessionals, Library Aides and Instructional Aides came together to participate in 'Next Steps for 21st Century Teaching & Learning.'
The featured speaker was Dr. Heidi Hayes Jacobs, an author and internationally recognized education leader known for her work in curriculum mapping, curriculum integration, and developing 21st century approaches to teaching and learning.
A highlight of the day was the Educator Exhibition of Learning, essentially a 'science fair poster board display for adults," which allowed participants to provide feedback to one another toward the goal of fostering growth and support.

Update on Before-and-After School Program
Superintendent Lisa Elliott updated the board on the process of identifying a candidate to run the program.
Ms. Elliott says there is an offer pending to an individual, who is expected to start mid-May, saying, "It has been a long, but thorough process."
Upon joining the district, that provider will come to a future board meeting to introduce themselves to board members.
