March Newsletter
Jones Intermediate 5th Grade
Happy March!
We are excited to let you know that the 5th graders at Jones have officially gone 1-to-1. This means that ALL students have access to a computer in each class. Please talk with your child about treating these devices with care. They are brand new and very expensive to fix if something happens to them.
Science
During the month of March, we will be wrapping up our unit on Weather with PBL presentations and choosing “Meteorologists” to add to the morning announcements.
Next, we’ll be moving into “Energy: Conservation and Transfer” with standard P.3… explain how the properties of some materials change as a result of heating and cooling.
*Note: The quarter 3 check-in will be on WEATHER.
*Please review all schoolnet tests through your child’s powerschool account…. These are excellent resources for review and practice for the Science EOG test.
Social Studies
We will integrate our social studies standards within our reading and social studies classes through H.2.1… summarize the contributions of the “Founding Fathers” to the development of our country.
Math
We are finishing up adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions. This week we will begin adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals. This will be our last standard to learn before our next check-in. Students are always encouraged to practice recent standards we have covered. They can do this at any time using their usernames and passwords found on their password tracker in their notebooks.
After the check-in students will be working on the following standards:
- 5.G.1- Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates. Understand that the first number indicates how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicates how far to travel in the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the coordinates correspond (e.g., x-axis and x-coordinate, y-axis and y-coordinate).
- 5.G.2-Represent real world and mathematical problems by graphing points in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane, and interpret coordinate values of points in the context of the situation.
- 5.OA.3-Generate two numerical patterns using two given rules. Identify apparent relationships between corresponding terms. Form ordered pairs consisting of corresponding terms from the two patterns, and graph the ordered pairs on a coordinate plane.
(Tentative quiz date for G1,G2, and OA3 is March 26.)
- 5.MD.2-Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Use operations on fractions for this grade to solve problems involving information presented in line plots. (Tentative quiz date for MD2 is March 29.)
Reading
We are working on Poetry. This will include many standards. Students will understand that they will need to integrate past experiences to deeply understand the poetry. The 3rd checkin is coming up quickly. The test will have an informational passage, literature passage and a poem. It is important for the children to not only be working on reading skills but test taking skills and time management.
