From Mr. Clemente
Dear Winter Park Band families,
An enormous THANK YOU to our students and parent volunteers for helping to make our DOOR-2-DOOR fundraiser such a success on Saturday! Our students were real troopers dealing with the less-than-ideal weather in the morning, but their efforts surely helped the Band program. Through the donations collected on Saturday, the Band raised $23,042.00! WOW what a great day! It is so wonderful to have a community so willing to support our students. A special thank you to Heather Ribaric for all of her hard work and planning, Mary Beth Johnston and all of our counting room volunteers for tallying the donations that were brought in, Mary Bernard for assisting with uniforms, and all of our parent drivers, without whom we would not be able to cover as much ground as we did. Thank you also to Melanie Maulfair and Kim Schmitt for coordinating and setting up lunch for the students and parent chaperones, along with Nancy Demopoulos-Roberts and Emily Muscatello helping to serve. If you know of anyone who is still looking to donate online, the DOOR-2-DOOR ONLINE DONATION LINK will be live at least until Monday, 2/10.
This week comes with two wonderful performance opportunities for students. Wednesday, 2/5, will be out Solo & Ensemble Recital Option performances from 1:30 - 3 PM. Please see below for the S&E Checklist to be prepared for your performance. Thursday, 2/6, our three jazz ensembles will perform at District Jazz MPA hosted by University HS. Please either see event above or click here to review the itinerary. Remember, the dress for Jazz MPA is the same as it was for Night of Jazz. Third we have our students performing at District Solo & Ensemble MPA and Auxiliary MPA on both Friday evening and Saturday, also hosted by University HS. Good luck to all our students on their performances!
SOLO AND ENSEMBLE CHECKLIST:
- Original score of my music, from the publisher, with all measures numbered.
- My performance time, and adjudicator I will be performing for.
- Communication with my accompanist, and confirmation that they know my performance time and adjudicator.
- Communication with the other members of my ensemble, planning of rides to University HS, confirming who is bringing the original for the adjudicator.
- Dressed professionally for performance - NO JEANS, NO SHORTS
- Ask Mr. Clemente and Mr. Smith any questions I may have ASAP so that I have my answers before arriving at University HS on Friday and/or Saturday.
Guest Conductor Workshop/Pre-MPA Concert: Next week, 2/13 - 2/15 is our annual Guest Conductor Workshop, which includes our Pre-MPA Concert. See the Band calendar for schedule of events. Please confirm with your family's calendar that any after-school rehearsals are scheduled as attendance is required. If Mr. Clemente and Mr. Smith have not heard of an unavoidable conflict this close to the event, any absence will be considered unexcused and result in a zero in the grade book. The Guest Conductor Workshop should not come as a surprise to any Band family, as it has been scheduled on the Band calendar since April of last school year.
This year, we welcome Mr. Mark Stice to WPHS as our Guest Conductor. Mr Stice is the Director of Bands at Okemos High School in Okemos, MI. He is a recent recipient of the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA) Teacher of the Year award, and has had long-term success at OHS. We're very lucky and excited to have Mr. Stice join us to help prepare for pour upcoming Concert MPA performances!
FINANCES: Our successful Door-2-Door fundraiser was a very big help to the finances of the Band program. However, even with the student share of the fundraising credit coming to the students who participated, the Band program will still be owed a significant amount. Once the total share per student is announced, please alleviate all past due balances no later than Wednesday, March 4. All Band obligations for this school year are due at that time. Thank you for your attention to this!
Let's have a fun and successful, performance-filled week!

BAND BOOSTER PRESIDENT MESSAGE
Week of February 2, 2020
Thank you to all of the drivers, students, counters, uniform organizers, meal providers, driver organizers, and others who worked so hard to make Door 2 Door successful. There was a LOT of planning and preparation that made it run smoothly, so a huge thanks to all who helped!
Next Thursday, 2/6/20, is Jazz MPA at University High School. Chaperones are needed to ride the buses with Jazz 2 and Freshman Jazz Band (9:30-3:15) and then later for Jazz 2 (3:30-9:10). Sign ups are now live on Charms. It is such a fun way to help and see the students perform some wonderful music. Stay tuned for information about chaperones needed for concert MPA at the end of February.
Please look at the band calendar often—this is a busy time of year, and the calendar is updated regularly to reflect any changes to the schedule.
We will have a General Band Booster meeting this Tuesday, February 4, 2020, at 7:00 pm in the band room on the main campus. Please attend if you are able for updates on Door 2 Door, upcoming events, the mattress sale fundraiser, and other information.
Have a wonderful week.

Color Guard - From Mrs. Johnson
Winter Guard kicked off their season at the Winter Sports Pep Rally on Friday the 17th. Their routine brought huge cheers as they seamlessly executed fast-paced and high energy flag work.
The Pep Rally performance was quickly followed by the FFCC Premiere on Saturday, January 18th at Lyman High School. This Guard team of 7 may be small in number but they are proving to be a force! Team Captain, Evan Mueller, along with Co-Captain, Tia Schaefer, and teammates Sydney Gevers, Janeisa Sullivan, Danaelis Rivera, Kathy Le, and Katina Ebalo performed a beautifully choreographed show set to Demi Lavato’s “Gift of a Friend.” Flag and rifle pieces went smoothly with Tia tossing a flawless triple. Evan and Katina rocked their solos that resulted in roaring applause from the spectators. It was a “dropless” show for this young team-very impressive! This season looks like it will be a strong one for the WPHS Winter Guard. Next up is Auxiliary MPA on this Friday, February 7.

SOLO & ENSEMBLE
What's next:
Now that students are signed up for the performance option of their choosing for S&E, now the real work begins. Preparation of a solo piece or chamber work is a very individual task, but no one should be preparing their music alone. Seek out help from anyone you can - Mr. Clemente, Mr. Smith, your private lesson teacher, a section leader, your middle school band director, etc. Feedback from someone you trust to be honest with you is invaluable in preparation for S&E.
For those students performing a piece for S&E that requires a piano accompanist, you should be planning to rehearse with them within the next week. Your accompanist needs just as much time to prepare their part as you do to prepare yours, and you need to rehearse performing together as a duet. All students performing a piece with an accompanist should schedule at least 2 rehearsals with you accompanist before your performance at S&E.
