March 2020
Letter from the Principal
It seems like time just speeds up once January is over and here we are, already in March!
There is so much going on today, that may be hard for our students to process, especially around COVID 19. I want to reassure you that our District Officials are monitoring our situation very closely and working to proactively address parent concerns. You should have been receiving regular communication directly from our District Office about the ongoing situation.
In the meantime, if you can spend some time talking to your kids about the importance of washing their hands with soap for at least 20 seconds (the ABC song is about that long), it will go a long way in preventing the spread of any virus.
This week, we had some great submissions for our Science Night by our students. I posted a few pictures and short video clips of our students explaining what they learned on Instagram (@Kolbeagles). A little later in the evening, we spent a wonderful evening looking at the constellations, moon and the planet Venus through some powerful telescopes. It never fails to amaze me that the lights we see twinkling above us are so many years old. I felt the wonder of a child as I peered through the telescopes myself.
We just received news about how well we did on our Boosterthon Fundraiser this year! We made an increase of $5,000 profit compared to last year, with 74% of our students receiving pledges, and pledges coming in from 23 different states and 12 countries! Please be sure to thank everyone who made donations to our school this year. We greatly appreciate every pledge made.
Sincerely,
Clara Lee

60 SECOND SCIENCE CHALLENGE
Experiment: Fizzing Love Potion
What you need:
- Vinegar
- Baking soda
- Red food coloring
- Tray or pan (to avoid a mess!)
- Two glasses or beakers
- Valentine's Day Cinnamon Hearts
What you do:
Step 1: Add 1 tablespoon of baking soda to your tall glass.
Step 2: In the second glass, add 12 tablespoons of vinegar, cinnamon hearts and a few drops of red food coloring.
Step 3: Add the colored vinegar to the baking soda glass and watch the fizzing begin!
What's happening?
You've created a chemical reaction! The baking soda is a base and the vinegar is an acid. When mixed together, this reaction produces carbon dioxide gas. This gas creates the bubbles that you see fizzing out of the potion. The red food coloring and candy hearts make the bubbles easier to see and act as a lovely addition to this experiment!
