BALLS
Dear Parents,
Our current study has offered children opportunities to investigate balls from many different perspectives. This week we focused on "Who uses balls?". Luckily, our school has plenty of places to play with balls! On Tuesday, we headed for a walk around our campus looking for places to use balls. The soccer field, tennis and basketball court were filled with students playing sports. This gave us the opportunity to discuss the different sports we can play with balls. On Wednesday Mr. Sanchis, High School P.E. teacher, visited us with more than 10 types of balls. He explained how each ball was made differently and how we use our bodies to move the balls for each sport.
But balls are not only used for sports, they also have an important use in construction sites. Children were introduced to the mighty wrecking ball during morning discussion. Later, in the blocks center, they had the opportunity to plan and build structures to wreck. An important part of the activity was coming up with safe and respectful ways to use the wrecking ball.
It was quite a surprise for our kids to see that animals also enjoy playing with balls. First we brainstormed how could some animals play with balls and then, we had a blast watching dolphins, lions, dogs, elephants and more playing different sports.
Next week we will have a small break from this study unit to celebrate International Week and honor cultural diversity.
