Walk to Read Support
Our fist 12 week cycle of Walk to Learn winds down on December 20. This big undertaking was a great success, and part of the success comes from our parent support.
Specifically, we want to thank Dani Wrobleski and Karly Miller for coming in 4 hours each week over the past 12 weeks to lead our Maker Lab class.
They did an amazing job on this student-favorite class.
Canned food Drive Success!
The Prestwood Holiday Canned Food Drive was a huge success!
The students collected nearly 5 large barrels of non-perishable food for FISH (Friends in Sonoma Helping). The majority of the food collected was used for holiday food baskets given out this past weekend to families in need.
Many classes will be rewarded this coming week for meeting their classroom can goal. Thank you to all the students and families that made the canned food drive a success!

http://signup.com/go/frGPqkSpecial Education Advisory Council (SEAC)
There is a new resource in Sonoma Valley for families dealing with special education needs: the SVUSD Special Education Advisory Council (SEAC), which was created in 2018 after formally being approved by the SVUSD Board of Trustees. The SEAC meets monthly on the 3rd Thursday of each month from 6-7:15pm at the Sonoma Valley Unified School District offices [17850 Railroad Avenue, Sonoma]. The next meeting will be held on 12/20/18 at 6pm. Spanish translation is available at each meeting. Meetings are open to the public and anyone is invited to attend.
Marni Sager & Lani Gullotta (Prestwood parents) are sharing the Prestwood School seat on the SVUSD SEAC. At least one of us will be present at each meeting and we will be sending out the meeting minutes each month, as part of the Prestwood Connection (the most current minutes are attached to this newsletter). We will also include any significant updates that we become aware of. We encourage any interested parents, families, community members, etc. to attend the meetings!!!
What is a SEAC?
SEAC’s exist all across the country, sometimes as SEPAC’s (Special Education Parent Advisory Councils or Committees) and work as an additional safety net of advocacy, parent and community education and compliance for school districts and special education students. All students with IEP’s and 504’s from pre-K, to transition from high school into adulthood, fall under the SEAC umbrella.
SEAC's do not determine policy, however they do provide guidance to the school district and have the ability to organize and help shape policy that can improve outcomes for disabled students, allowing an opportunity for parents to not just advocate for their own child, but for all children in their district with disabilities. Local SEAC's have flexibility in terms of how they are organized but they are required to be parent majority and parent-led and their purpose is to advise districts and advocate for students with disabilities.
The SEAC will be comprised of mostly parents, but will also include educators, community members and students.

Special Education Advisory Council (SEAC)
