September is the perfect time to reconnect with our school community, and I hope to see many of our families and friends at the Ice Cream Social this coming Thursday from 5:30-7:30. It's the perfect opportunity to meet other Avoca families (Marie Murphy families take part as well!) and to put some faces to the names that your student(s) bring home. The PTC is giving the event a new look this year with the Kona Ice truck that will have free icees for all. The event is also a great chance to learn more about different clubs and activities (and volunteer opportunities) that might pique your interest! See you on the Avoca West playground on Thursday!

I also welcome our Avoca parents and caregivers to join us this Wednesday (7:00pm) on Zoom for a MTSS Parent Night. This is a chance for us to share information about how Avoca's Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) looks in action with students in our district. The content of this will be almost identical to our previous MTSS Parent Night and we will do a NEXT level MTSS Parent Night this coming January. This is an opportunity to learn and share your voice with us about how we can better support our families in understanding the process. The Zoom link will be sent out on Wednesday!

Fall conferences are set for October 26th & 27th (half day attendance for students), but we are still waiting to hear from our staff and families on what you think works best to make conferences accessible for our families. Dr. Osburn shared it previously, but PLEASE stop a weigh in on his survey for families below. Thank you!!

One of our strategic goals is to level up our staff collaboration at Avoca and how we engage with one another in our professional learning communities (PLCs). As a school community that values our close, family-like feel and tight connections, inquiry can sometimes feel a bit tricky as we ask questions of one another. Understanding ourselves and the natural push-pull of reactions and responses is something that we know will further our work together with colleagues and all those we encounter in our lives.

A video that serves as an anchor for helping our staff develop in this social-emotional arena is one that I hope will serve our families and community as well. From The Conscious Leadership Group, I hope you find that this video brings you into the fold of our language and culture at Avoca West and builds your toolkit to better understand yourself and others as well. September 29th - Lurie's Parent/Caregiver Information Night for 4th & 5th Grade Families. Via Zoom, learn more from Lurie's about what they'll be teaching our 4th & 5th graders as we seek to build an inclusive community of learners.

October 5th -- No School

October 6th -- Lurie's Gender Upstanders - 4th & 5th Grades

October 10th -- Victor Pacini sessions for K-2nd, 3rd-4th, and 5th grade (Erin's Law requirement)
