The Great Perth Road Public School Chess Tournament is almost here!
Mr. Depew's Grade 4/5 class has been learning chess over the last couple of months at recesses, and almost the whole class has signed up for our tournament on Thursday, April 27th. We also extended an open invitation to competent chess players in all classes grade 4-8 who would like to compete, and will be running 2 competitive pools of intermediate and advanced players - almost 40 students! Students will be called out of class periodically during the day to play their matches, and will advance to the next level with each win. It will be a fantastic display of skill!
Perth Road is particularly dedicated this year to the delivery of engaging math lessons that not only cement curriculum-based math concepts, but foster the lifelong thinking skills that math embraces. Chess has long been used worldwide as a teaching tool, and is in fact an integral part of the math curriculum in several countries.
How are math and chess intimately connected?
1. logic and sequential thinking - players must plan and calculate potential moves and combinations, thinking ahead to the possible responses of their opponent
2. forethought and prediction - chess is a game of strategy - threats, counter-threats, and attacks - seek every opportunity and avoid every pitfall
3. problem solving and decision making- every move presents a series of new variables that require changes, new directional thinking and stamina for prolonged thought - there is cause and effect present at every turn - every decision, good or bad, carries with it a consequence
4. focus, attention, concentration and patience - a poorly played move or a rushed decision without considering all of the immediate and distant possible outcomes could result in disaster - there is a reason that chess is played in silence with no distractions!
5. sharpened memories - a player will remember a well honed strategy and sequences as easily as a tragic error, and seek to repeat it (or not!)
6. critical thinking - a player must use rationality to make decisions based on possible scenarios and outcomes - narrow the possibilities and choose the best option

Math Mashup Weekly Challenge
Math Mashup Weekly Challenge
Each week a math challenge will be posted for students to try. The challenge will be posted on Twitter and on the Problem Solving bulletin board. Students should submit their solution to Mrs. Croth by the end of the school day on Thursday. The correct solution will be announced on Friday's announcements and posted on the bulletin board.
Remember~ math is fun, and we all love a challenge! (This week's challenge is below)
Proceeding with Purpose- Athletics and the Arts
Basketball Season is here!
This year we had enough children and enthusiasm to have 2 junior boys teams and 2 junior girls teams. Everyone who tried out was able to participate. Students are in grades 4-6. Mr. Lloyd and Mr. Dobiech organized the teams and are coaching along with: parent volunteers Nicole Mundell and Karyn Mclean, grade 7 and 8 volunteer coaches and a variety of other teachers who've volunteered to supervise practices. Teams will have variety of games throughout March and April, tournaments March 31 and April 1st @ Lasalle SS/Sir John A and April 7th and 8th @ Sydenham HS/Loughborough PS with divisional tournaments TBA for the first week of May.
