The Riviera Press
Issue 15: Week of March 15-19
Featured Faculty: Mr. Elman
Mr. Elman has been a part of our Riviera family since 2017, but had already been teaching for fifteen years prior. When Mr. Elman was asked about what inspired him to be a teacher, he shared an enjoyable story and stated, “I will always remember this day like it was yesterday. One day I was sitting in my college history class, and I had a sudden feeling as if a lightbulb had lit up in my head and knew in that moment I wanted to become a teacher.” From then on, Mr. Elman studied English and political science at Tufts University and later earned a master’s degree in journalism. He believes that the best part about teaching is trying to encourage students in the pure pursuit of knowledge and the power that the pursuit holds. His least favorite part about teaching is grading for each and every one of his classes, which can understandably be a handful to juggle all at once. Out of all of his years of teaching, Mr. Elman’s favorite topic was teaching Shakespeare to his students because they would create dramatic performances and would thoroughly enjoy the lesson through expressive learning techniques. We are so happy to have passionate teachers like Mr. Elman as a part of our Riviera family.

In the Art Studio: Amazon Animals
This week in Mrs. Horne’s sixth-grade class, students were tasked to create a metal embossing, a type of printmaking with copper, that represents an animal from the Amazon forest of their choosing. Once the students have chosen their animal, they have to research the animal’s natural habitat and depict it with a black background and color pencils. Students had to combine both mediums in order to create their amazing pieces. If you look closely, you can notice the animals are hidden deeply in the jungle!
Mrs. Horne says, “This was especially challenging because students had to learn how to draw gently with color pencils going from dark to light as well as combine different mediums in one project. These students did an incredible job with great enthusiasm and fun!” Mrs. Horne couldn’t be more proud of her students.

Summer at the Riv
Spring is here, which means that summer is quickly approaching! Riviera is once again offering enriching summer school programs for students to get ahead on their coursework and complete certain prerequisite classes. Our summer school program gives the opportunity for our students to take a foreign language; advance their required math, science, or history required courses; or even complete required writing classes. Summer school allows students the availability in their schedules to take a more creative or diverse elective class during the academic school year. This year, our summer school program will be available to all students either on campus or online. Do not hesitate to sign up and get ahead on the required coursework. For more information on available courses or how to pair summer school offerings with Riviera Summer Camp, please contact Ms. Marie Castellanos at mariecastellanos@rivieraschools.com
