3 Luni 2022 Nusipepa
Rosehill College
From the Puleaoga,
Tālofa lava,
We have celebrated Samoan Language Week with presentations in assemblies and an assembly for Pacific and Māori students today. It has been great to see Pacific students wearing their cultural attire and adding some bright colour to the week. Otago University sent us an article from their March news, about Iokopeta Tobeck, one of our Head Students in 2019. “Iokopeta would like to use her degree to become a physical activity consultant for Pacific peoples. This involves organising activities that make exercise enjoyable and accessible for those who have been prescribed exercise by their doctor. She says the trick is “understanding that the small changes matter. The idea behind that is, if you’re going to give yourself a break, make sure you compensate for it somewhere else.”
We will continue with Year 10 and Year 9 being rostered home at the end of next week:
- Year 10 students will be rostered home for distance learning today on Friday 10 June.
- Year 9 students will be rostered home for distance learning on Monday 13 June.

School Ball - Important Information:
To Parents/Caregivers of students attending the School Ball on Saturday 11 June:
To ensure that the Ball runs smoothly, please note the following:
- The doors open at 8pm and close at 8.30pm. Late arrivals will not be admitted.
- Students must present their Ball ticket to gain admission.
- The Ball finishes at midnight and students will be released into the Ellerslie Events Centre Carpark at that time. Please ensure that the transport for your student is at the venue at midnight, as students who are late being picked cannot wait inside the building. Below is a map of how to access the carpark. Event Centre staff will be there to direct traffic as they usually operate a one-way system to speed things up.
The school’s responsibility ends at midnight and we ask that parents and caregivers ensure their student’s safety with clear instructions about their return home.
Loves-Me-Not Programme
This year we are extremely fortunate again that our school is able to deliver the 'Loves-Me-Not' programme to all of our Year 12 students on Thursday 16th of June.
It will be a whole day workshop facilitated by Police and teaching staff. The programme is inspired by real events in New Zealand. The Police Educators, along with a teaching member of staff, present evidence to engage young people in conversations regarding safety in relationships and how to read signs of unsafe relationships.
The messages that are delivered by the programme are extremely important for students to enable them to identify healthy and unhealthy relationships so they can make safe choices in regards to their relationships now and in the future.
All Year 12 students are expected to be at school and to participate in this beneficial program. If your child is a Year 13 student who is enrolled in three or more Year 12 subjects, they will be involved in this programme and are expected to attend on the day. Below is some key information regarding the Loves Me Not program.
We also encourage whānau to watch the introduction video below where Nigel Latta explains how Loves Me Not teaches senior secondary students about health relationships. The film encourages parents to talk with their teenage children about navigating relationships and avoiding relationship abuse.
Loves-Me-Not aims to:
- Assist schools that are seeking to support student well-being through a whole-school approach
- Encourage and empower young people to absolutely reject abuse in relationships
- Encourage young people to be safe and active bystanders who take action against unhealthy relationships
- Encourage young people to take a stand against myths in society that perpetuate relationship violence
- Help young people know who they can go to in their community to seek advice and support if they need it as either victims or perpetrators
- Encourage young people to contribute to, or create a wider community response so as to encourage others to accept only healthy relationships.
Spoken Word Workshop Results
On Saturday 28th May a team from Rosehill College entered the Word the Frontline Regional Heats with their spoken word poems. They did really well, however Rosehill College is not going through to the semi finals this year.
Action Education has offered us some free workshops to get a Spoken Word Club up and running at Rosehill College. This will help poets to develop their craft and share with each other. The Spoken Word Club will be run by students in B2, with coaches attending to lead workshops. If you are interested in being part of this, please get in contact with Ms Simmons (j.simmons@rosehillcollege.school.nz).
Zellas Uitisone and Brody Majoor have been invited to perform their poems at the Stand Up Poetry Slam event on 15 June at 7pm at Studio One Toi Tū. Mālo lava! Well done!

Dalina will be representing Gymsports Manukau at Nationals in Invercargill from July 12-16.
Hillary Challenge 2022
The Hillary Challenge was set in the Whakarewarewa Forest in Rotorua this year. This 6 Hour adventure race saw eight of our Year 12 students try to navigate their way around the forest on foot and mountain bike. After a successful first half of the race the team had a few navigation issues in the second half. However, it was great to see how the team stick together and kept pushing all the way through the 6 hour
Well done to Hiroyuki Kobayashi and Theo Needham who represented Rosehill College at the College Sport Auckland Cross Country Championships on Thursday. With close to 100 competitors in each of their age groups, Hiroyuki and Theo did themselves and the school proud, both putting in excellent times through a wet and muddy course.

Badminton
A Grade
Our A grade players had some action packed games this week. Scarlett Go had a tough day at the office going down in three sets in her singles. In her doubles, she struggled to get momentum and was on the back foot from the outset.
Matt Wong showed some guts and determination as he had to play 3 games in a row. In his first singles game he went down in a thrilling 3 sets match losing the final set 21-20. Matt managed to show a positive mindset against a tough Strathallan opponent but couldn't overcome the fatigue. In his doubles with Kat Nagaya, they managed to stay in the rally to force a win in a game that could have gone either way.
B Grade
Our B grade side came up against Alfriston College who were sitting in second place. The boys put out another good performance in the singles flying out of the blocks with two wins to Daniel Grayson-Clarke and Jeremy Thompson. Jordan has continued to make huge strides in his game applying the skills learnt at training to win his match. From there the team managed to shut out another team to win their third match 6 nil to maintain top spot.

Football
1st XI Boys 3 v Waiuku 2
The 1st XI boys team has bounced back strongly after a defeat in the opening week of the season, mounting a late push to overcome Waiuku 3-2. After a back and forth first half, Rittivong Thammavongsar snuck one in to put the boys up 1-0 before the break. The second half started off poorly with Waiuku scoring twice in the space of a few minutes. The boys replied well and were determined to get the win, led by Captain Mohjit Singh, who scored a 30-yard screamer to level the game with minutes to go. With time ticking down, Mohjit managed another shot, which deflected into the goal, sealing the win. The team worked well under pressure, with stand-out performances from Lachlan Grant and Liam Powell.
