SMART Family Literacy

Key Club volunteers from Ball High School worked with SMART Family Literacy artist, Catherine Stroud, to paint a mural at Parker Elementary school's garden. Community involvement in garden art brings ownership to these shared spaces and encourages family interactions on campus. SMART Family Literacy supports teachers and students in using the school gardens and artistic spaces during the school day to support SMART (Science, Math, Art, Reading, and Technology) activities.

National Volunteer Appreciation Week

In honor of National Volunteer Appreciation Week, the Department of Family and Protective Services is excited to introduce you to our new online volunteer hub on VOMO. The DFPS Volunteer Hub lets volunteers:

  • View and sign up for local volunteer opportunities.
  • Build their volunteer resumes every time they participate.
  • Receive updates and reminders for each opportunity they are signed up for.
  • Earn and receive VOMO awards for volunteering.

To see volunteer opportunities available in your local area, please visit the DFPS Volunteeer Hub.

We are so grateful for the 4,700 volunteers and interns that donate their time, talents, and resources by sitting in the hospital with children, making weekly social calls to elderly clients, stocking and organizing resource rooms, serving on councils and committees, leading special events, and so much more.

DFPS always welcomes caring community members who want to lend a hand, and I hope that you will be inspired to join us in serving children, families, older adults, and people with disabilities in Texas. We need good people, like you, to help us make a difference.

Happy National Volunteer Appreciation Week!
