Pinehill School News - 11 August
11 August 2021 - Week 3, Term 3
Message from our Principal
Kia ora tatou,
Maths Week
This week is Maths Week at Pinehill School. And what a fantastic week it started out as! There have been many exciting events and challenges that have taken place so far. On top of the classroom and team Maths Week challenges, there has also been a daily maths problem posted on our TV station. It has been wonderful seeing the students persevere to work out solutions to these problems either individually or in groups. We have also been fortunate to have maths fairies visit this week. Fairy Veldman, Fairy Mabon and Fairy Ward are visiting all classrooms with challenging maths problems and prizes. The children are having to do a lot of thinking and strategising to solve the problems. The fairies have been very impressed with the maths thinking in all the classrooms they have visited so far. A big thank you to Marg Milne and Caitlin Blackwell for leading us through Maths Week. This is definitely an annual highlight!
Maths questions to work on at home
Please find the Maths questions at the end of this week's newsletter for students to work on at home. All answers are due back by Friday.
Congratulations Chloe Warwick
Congratulations to Chloe Warwick, Room 19 class teacher, who is expecting a baby in November. We are absolutely delighted with this exciting news. Chloe will take maternity leave from the beginning of term 4. Sarah Stubbs, who is well known and respected at Pinehill School, will return from maternity leave and teach in Room 19 for the remainder of the year. We are in the planning stages for this now and know this will be a smooth transition for our students.
Jump Jam
The whole school was treated to a stunning Jump Jam Performance at last week's assembly from our Yr 3/4 and Year 5/6 teams. The audience were wowed by the coordination, rhythm, skill, endurance, passion and pizzazz our students demonstrated. Over the weekend I had the privilege of being an audience spectator and supporting and cheering on our Pinehill Jump Jam Teams at the competition run at Torbay Primary School. I was a very proud principal and commend both teams for outstanding performances. Congratulations to the Year 4 Pinehill Army team who placed 2nd overall with a merit in technical execution and presentation. They also received the sportsmanship award which is only given out to one school. Congratulations to the Year 6 Absolutely Pinehill team who placed 3rd overall with an excellence in technical execution and presentation. Thank you to Calla Cheng and Emily Thomson who have helped coach. A special mention to Lisa Everett who has made this happen and taken on this initiative for our students. Lisa has provided a fantastic opportunity for our students. Thank you Lisa!
The Resilience Project
This year we have taken on The Resilience Project as a way to support our students in their wellbeing. All classrooms use The Resilience Project resources. In our recent Health and PE Curriculum survey to the community, it was highlighted that our families who were not able to make the information afternoon on The Resilience Project would like to know more about it. The following link will take you to the The Resilience Project Project homepage.
We have already conducted a survey of our Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 students to gather some baseline data so that we can measure how well the programme is working for our tamariki. We will take an end of year survey to measure the effect on well being that has occurred for our students.
The youtube clip below gives you an outline of the origins of the programme from its founder Hugh van Cuylenburg.
I would like to acknowledge all the staff for the work they do with all our students. We are fortunate to have wonderful teachers, fantastic support staff and great office staff.
Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini
Success is not the work of one but the work of many.
Ngā mihi nui,
Carla Veldman,
Principal

Second Hand Uniforms
● Is your child leaving Pinehill School?
● Do you have Pinehill School uniforms that your children no longer wear?
● Are these uniforms in good condition?
If you answer YES, please donate them for us to sell at our second-hand uniforms online store. We accept uniforms in any condition, however, we ask them to be in a clean and resellable state. Please hand in your donation to the school office. Thank you very much for your generosity! All money raised will go towards the new netball and basketball posts for the bottom court.
Thank you to all families who purchased from our online store. We understand sometimes the uniform does not meet your expectations. We accept returns or exchanges. Before returning items to the office, please send your return/exchange request to our email pinehillfops@gmail.com. All items need to be returned in the state they were sold and any request for return or exchange needs to be made within 7 days of purchase. Handling fees will be applied to return/exchange received after this period.
This online store is operated by FOPS volunteers to raise money for the school and the volunteers gave up their own time to make this possible therefore the store does not have a set opening hours. We try to fulfill orders within 3 working days, however, it can take longer. We thank you for your patience and understanding. If you require your order urgently, please email us.
