Body Dysmorphic Disorder
BBD- is a body-image disorder characterized by persistent and intrusive preoccupations with an imaged or slight detection ones appearance. People with this disorder think about their real or perceived flaws for hours each day.
Symptoms
- camouflaging
- comparing body part to others appearance
- seeking surgery
- checking in a mirror
- avoiding mirrors
- skin picking
- excessive grooving
- excessive exercise
- changing clothes excessively
Causes
- experience of dramatic events or emotional conflict during childhood
- low self esteem
- parents and others who are critical with the other person appearance
Long term effects
- drop out of school
- quit their jobs
- refuse to leave home
Anorexia
Refusing to let your body eat and starvation to your own body
Causes
- feeling of over weight
- runs in families
- feeling of not fitting in
- environmental and social factors
Symptoms
- refusal to maintain a healthy body weight
- an intense fear of gaining weight
- a distorted body image
- severe mood swings; depression
- lack of energy and weakness
- poor memory
- constipation and bloating
Long term effects
- body slows down to conserve energy
- body continues to starve itself
- medical complications pile up
- growth of fine hair everywhere
- your body and mind will slow down and pay the price
Binge eating
Type of eating disorder that is characterized by recurrent binge eating with out the regular use of compensatory measures to counter the binge eating.
Symptoms
- frequent episodes of consuming very large amounts of food
- without behaviors to prevent weight gain such as vomiting
- feeling of being out of control
- feelings of shame or guilt
Long term effects
- high blood pressure
- high cholesterol
- heart disease
- diabetes
- gall bladder disease
Causes
- biological abnormalities
- hypothalamus may not be sending correct messages about hunger and fullness
- social pressure to be thin
Bulimia
An eating disorder characterized by frequent episodes of binge eating followed by frantic efforts to avoid gaining weight. Effects men and women of all ages.
Causes
- poor body image
- low self esteem
- history of trauma or abuse
- major life changes
- appearance caused by professions or activities
Symptoms
- lack of control over eating
- self esteem problems
- eating unusually large amounts of food
- disappearance of food
- alternating or fast eating and over eating
- going to bathroom after eating
- excessive exercise
Long term effects
- swelling of hands and feet
- chronic soar throat
- broken blood vessels in eyes
