Carleton Washburne
Monday Memo - November 29, 2021
Washburne Families,
We hope that everyone enjoyed a safe, healthy and relaxing Thanksgiving holiday. Today is the first day of our second trimester at Washburne and it has been wonderful to see the excitement in our students as they begin their new elective courses. We are also excited to host our first in-person band concert in almost two years this Thursday night. This is one of the many events we are thankful for as we continue to move through the 2021-22 school year.
This Friday, Washburne is hosting a second vaccine clinic in conjunction with all the New Trier Township Elementary School Districts. Please note that there will be additional traffic in the area on Friday. On Saturday, December 4th, our 8th grade students will take the New Trier placement tests at New Trier High School.
As the weather turns colder, please remember that our doors open for all students each morning at 8:20 AM. Students should be dressed appropriately for winter weather each day, and please remind students to bring an extra mask to school.
We are thankful and fortunate to have a supportive community that partners with us, as we continue to provide in-person experiences for our students, preparing them both socially and academically as they continue to high school and beyond.
Thank you for your collaboration and support.
Take Care and Be Well,
Andrew Fenton and Ben Horwitz
Washburne Principal/Assistant Principal
Saturday Intramural Basketball Program
The intramural basketball program is set to begin on Saturday, December 11 from 12-2 with our team formation day. This house league program is open to all Washburne kids. The season will start with games on January 8th and go through Spring Break. We will not have our program on January 15 or February 19. Registration is done online and can be found here. If you have any questions, please contact Andy Becker at AndyBecker@winnetka36.org
Cardio Club Starts This Week
We are happy to announce that our after-school club, the Cardio/Resistance Training Club, is back. This will be a time for students to improve their fitness training, going beyond what is done in Kinetic Wellness. The Club will meet Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3:30 – 4:30. Students may attend when their schedule allows. As a member of the cardio/resistance training club, students will receive 3 hours a week in the fitness room, supervision from a certified KW teacher, and a chance to perform their own workout.
The club starts this week on Tuesday, November 30, 2021 and will continue until March 24, 2022. All students are welcome to join us as we set goals, work on personal training habits, and work on another wonderful lifetime fitness activity.
Registration is open and can be found on the Washburne website under clubs & athletics or use this link. Cardio/Resistance Training Club Registration Link

Window to Washburne
Welcome to Window to Washburne! Each week, we will be highlighting some of the learning taking place in our classrooms.
In the week before Thanksgiving, 8th grade girls had the opportunity to participate in Futures Unlimited, a field trip to promote careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). This program, run by Oakton Community College, allows students to hear from experts in the field and participate in interactive breakout sessions. Its goal is to showcase the many different exciting career opportunities that are available in STEM and to highlight the opportunities available for our female students. In addition, students were able to hear about all of the applied arts courses that are offered at New Trier. Unfortunately, this was one of many events that was cancelled last year, so we are grateful that our students were able to participate virtually. Throughout the day, our students were guided by several of our STEM staff, including Mr. Selgrat, Ms. Gajos, Ms. Knaff, and Ms. Keeter.
Kudos to our Washburne staff for organizing a fantastic day of learning for our students.
What's Happening in Related Studies
Trimester 1 ended with a bang for the Centerstage and Stagecraft classes. They presented the fall play production of Myth Adventures by Eric Coble on Wednesday, November 17 in the Little Theatre, our first live theatre performance in almost 2 years. Students in the Centerstage classes focused on storytelling as they took on the challenge of creating the characters from the page to the stage. They collaborated in a group-playwriting workshop to write the original escape room scenes, providing a frame for Eric Coble’s Greek myths.
Stagecraft students designed and constructed all of the behind-the-scenes elements of the show, including the costumes, props, scenery, lighting, and sound elements. This play-production process challenged our students to work collaboratively, to solve problems creatively, to develop resilience, to communicate effectively, and to practice empathy, all of which are qualities we value in our Winnetka graduates.
