The Trekker Times

Principal's Pen
Dear Bishop Baraga Trekkers,
This Thursday is the feast day of one of my favorite saints, St. Katharine Drexel. She grew up in a wealthy family but she dedicated her life to the poor and gave away millions of dollars. She founded missions and schools, and in particular helped African Americans and Native American Indians. She was harassed by various groups as she worked toward racial justice. At the bottom of this newsletter you can listen to an amazing story from her life.
March is reading month! Our teachers have all sorts of fun activities planned for the students to get them excited about reading. You can see the planned dress down days on the Schoolspeak calendar. We will also send an email or text the day before each special event as a reminder. Tomorrow in the younger grades we are having stripe day in honor of Dr. Seuss. Students may dress down, and they should wear something with stripes. The 5th - 8th graders will have a spirit day. They can wear their Trekker t-shirts and jeans. Tuesday is also Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent. We are having a pancake breakfast that morning at Queen of Peace. The kindergarten through eighth grade will be taking buses to the church soon after they arrive at school. Thanks to the Parent Association for sponsoring this event!
Lent begins this Wednesday with Ash Wednesday. Please join us for Mass that morning at St. Mary and St. Joseph Parish. Toward the bottom of this newsletter is a short video on the significance of Ash Wednesday. I hope you can find a few minutes to listen to it. At school, each classroom will have their own Lenten activity that they will practice as a class. Ask your children about it!
Our Caught Being a Christian Award this week goes to Mateo Raiche. Mateo switched books at Mass with another student who could not find their page. He was practicing the virtue of kindness. Great job, Mateo!
God bless,
Angela Oller
