Hawks Happenings

December 2020

Starting to wrap up the year 2020

I can't believe it is December! This year has been filled with new challenges, frustration and lots of new learning. For every moment that has been overwhelming, there have certainly been some silver linings. Our students are so resilient to new procedures, guidelines and safety rules. They are very adaptable and still find time to smile in the middle of the chaos! I am thankful that I have the opportunity to work with such great leaders.

I would like to call your attention to a new feature of our newsletter. If you look in the upper right hand corner, it has a translate button. If you click on this button, the newsletter will be translated into the language you select. Google Translate is used for this service. I hope this will help our families who speak a primary language other than English stay up to date on school events and news.

Thank you for your continued support of our school! Together we can work to accomplish great things for our students!

Please join us for the monthly PTO meeting that will be held on Tuesday, December 1st at 6:30 PM. A Zoom link will be sent via email. Please do not share this link on social media for safety reasons.

Please remind your child to vote for our yearbook cover if they haven't already done so!

Students may vote only one time. Here is the link if you need it: https://forms.gle/mxkLv4oCundAYCF39

Voting will end at 4 PM on Tuesday, December 1st.

Thank you to all the students who submitted an entry for our contest!

Important announcement about our specials (Art, Music, PE and Media)

After trying the live zoom lessons in specialist classes, and receiving input from parents, teachers, and students, we have decided to return to the original format (asynchronous lessons) starting the week of November 30th.

As before, students will be on a 2 week specialist rotation. It is the student's responsibility to complete their assignments on the learning management system on the weeks they don't receive in-person instruction from specialists (Art, Music, PE, and Media).

Winter Weather & School Day plans

Weather Updates

The winter season is almost upon us, and this year, snow days will look much different for Buncombe County Schools. In the past, an inclement weather day meant that students stayed home and did not attend school. That lost learning day was made up later in the year.

This year most inclement weather days will be remote days, just like our schedule on Wednesdays. Our group A, B, and Remote students will have school work pre-assigned to them so their learning can continue. So, when inclement weather impacts our area, the school district will decide whether the day will be an optional teacher workday/remote learning day OR an annual leave day.

• If the day is an annual leave day, staff will not report to work and students will not be expected to participate in remote learning.

• If the day is an optional teacher workday, students will be expected to participate in remote learning independently at their own pace.

If significant disruptions prevent students from completing assignments that day, they will have 5 days to make up the work. This plan will ensure we are able to deliver the required and much needed hours of instruction this year and reduce the need to add school days to the end of the year.

Free and Reduced Lunch Form

We are asking all parents who think they may qualify for the federal free and reduced meals program to fill out the application form today! >>>https://bit.ly/2IH14sC

This program is completely anonymous. While all school meals are currently being offered at no cost, we know that this won’t always be the case. It’s so important that our school system is able to accurately report how many families qualify for this program. Not only can it help families ease the burden of paying for school meals, but this data is used for other important programs including:

Possible issuance of additional state EBT benefits available to families this year,
Possible new COVID-19 relief funds,
Allotment of funds for certain technology discounts or literacy support programs,
Waivers of fees to take the ACT and other tests,
And, use by the agency for academic performance measures.

The best way to apply for this important program is online! Please visit the link to do so!
You must act soon! This window for data collection ends on December 1!

Winter Celebration Parade for Remote Learners

Several parents have asked if Remote students can connect with their teachers briefly before the end of December. We have decided to provide this optional opportunity for connection before Winter Break.

Please see the times below that we have chosen for the Winter Celebration Parade for the Remote Students and Teachers. During these times, you may drive your car through the bus circle to join the parade. You are encouraged to honk and wave at your child's teacher. Gifts may be handed out if desired. Please - no homemade food. Teachers can also give gifts to the students at this time.

Date: Friday, December 18th

2nd Grade 11:00-11:30

3rd Grade 11:30-12:00

4th Grade 12:00-12:30

Families with students in multiple grade levels should reach out to your children's teachers to arrange a time to see both teachers so families only need to come through the procession one time.

Our staff is having a little fun with special dress up days that relate to holiday movies throughout the month of December. Students are welcome to participate if they would like to do so! See the schedule below. If you can't read the picture, a PDF version is included at the end of the newsletter.
