CENTER FOR ACADEMIC SUCCESS (CAS)

AP EXAM REGISTRATION (Late Registration is open until March 4)
Royal High School would like that all students take AP exams for the AP classes in which they are enrolled. For the 2019 AP exams, students at Royal High School will be registering online. This year each AP exam costs $94.00.
Online Exam registration will begin on Wed, Jan 30, 2019 at 4:00 AM and end on Mon, Mar 4, 2019 at 11:59 PM. In order to register, students should click on the link provide on the school website or visit www.TotalRegistration.net/AP/053379 to register.

- Sat, Feb 16, 2019 at 11:59 PM - Registrations and payments after this date will incur a $20 late fee per exam.

NAEP TESTING (This Wednesday)
Some of our seniors were randomly selected by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) to take an assessment in mathematics, reading, or science on Wednesday, February 20th.
NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students know and can do in various subjects. For more details about NAEP testing click HERE for parent letter and links to their website.
INCOMING SENIOR INFORMATION NIGHT (for current juniors) - February 25th
Note: The original date has been moved to February 25th.
Our counselors will be holding an information night to get our current juniors ready for their senior year. This will include information about class registration for 2019-2020, timeline of steps to prepare for applying to college, SAT/ACT plans, and many other senior year events. This is an important night to attend for all junior parents and students.
PSAT 9 and 10
On Tuesday, February 26th we will use part of the school day to test 100 of our freshmen and all of our sophomores with the Preliminary SAT (PSAT 9 and 10). The PSAT can serve several purposes. It is a practice test to the SAT, provides the school with data to help students determine Advanced Placement (AP) readiness, and it can help students determine career interests.
2019-2020 COURSE REGISTRATION - NAVIANCE
Beginning next week our students will begin to choose classes for next year. We will be doing this through the Naviance Course Planner (click link for directions). Counselors will meet with the students in groups as well as a follow-up one-on-one meeting to ensure students are making informed decisions. Below is a list of a few resources as students begin to explore classes.

AERIES PORTAL
Logging in and monitoring your student's grades can all be done from the Aeries portal. The importance of this cannot be communicated enough. Parents and students will be able to better partner with the teachers by monitoring students' grades, attendance, and other important information within Aeries.

ADULT SPORTS PASSES AVAILABLE
New adult sports passes are here. This punch card (20 punches) can be used for entry to any of our home sporting event (not including CIF playoffs). Each member of your party entering the game equates to a punch on the card. Passes are valid for the entire 18-19 school year. $110 (20% savings) at the Activities & Athletics office. WORK EXPERIENCE
GET PAID & EARN ELECTIVE CREDITS
Students with qualifying jobs can join WEE (Work Experience Education) and earn practical arts or elective credits. This class combines on-the-job training with one hour a week of classroom instruction. Classes are semester or year long.
INTERNSHIP CLASSES
Internships can be used as a valuable tool, to gain job experience, strengthen resumes, and receive elective credits. Each semester Royal High School coordinates with community businesses offering student internships.

- Internships through Chamber of Commerce & the Youth Employment Service
- Teacher Assistant (on campus) and Teachers of Tomorrow (off campus)
If you are interning at a local business, check-in with Mrs. Longo in the Work Experience office 2-11. Your non-paid internship combined with weekly class instruction, may qualify for elective credits.

Royal High School students can explore Regional Occupational Program courses which are offered each semester at the Career Education Center at the Camarillo campus, the Moorpark campus and local high schools.

VOLUNTEER AT THE COMMUNITY GARDEN
A variety of opportunities to participate in garden projects, farm projects, skills development projects in woodworking, masonry, mechanical equipment, agriculture, administrative tasks, social media management, etc. and community projects such as the Free Farmers Market, the @SocialFeed hunger project, the Worm Farm etc. Volunteers of all ages accepted, please complete the Participation Form found here. DETAILS: Since 1848, Rhodes College has been instilling the timeless values of truth and honor in Southern sons and daughters, and today increasing numbers of students from the rest of the country are discovering its charms. The school’s honor code means exams are not proctored and backpacks are left unattended in the cafeteria. Its small size gives everyone an opportunity to take on leadership roles in campus clubs and organizations, and people are generally friendly. Throw in the college’s proximity to Memphis’s world-famous Beale Street, barbecue, and the blues, and it’s clear that Rhodes offers a winning combination. “Rhodes students are generally fun-loving people with passions for academic advancement and community engagement,” says a senior.
To receive a Rhodes degree, students must demonstrate proficiency in 12 areas that form the foundation of the liberal arts. These include being able to critically examine questions of meaning and value, developing excellence in written communication, and understanding how historical forces have shaped human cultures. A new, yearlong First Year Experience course is also required of freshmen.
Rhodes is especially strong in the natural and social sciences, thanks to labs with state-of-the-art equipment. Business is the most popular major, followed by biology, psychology, English, and neuroscience. Educational studies is the newest major available. Aside from traditional lecture-style classes, the college offers seminars, honors programs, one-on-one Directed Inquiry tutorials, and interdisciplinary majors. Rhodes is a member of the Associated Colleges of the South, and it participates in a second degree program for engineers with Washington University in St. Louis. The academic climate at Rhodes is “demanding and challenging,” according to one student. “Professors expect quality contributions.” Sixty-nine percent of classes have fewer than 20 students, which means professors are more than talking heads.
