Principal Lunde's Weekly Update

August 24, 2020 Updates

This Friday is a fun day for UELF Students. We are having our Supply Pick Up Day from 7am until 5:30pm. All students will have a bag of new resources for them to use in the upcoming weeks, including the all-school garden project. Families can come by anytime to pick up the student bag. The bags will be on the sidewalk, labeled by teacher. Please remember to wear your face covering and keep a 6ft physical distancing if there is someone before you.

Friday is our School Spirit Day so show your UELF Seawolf Pride, plus we have an ALL-School Assembly at 1:30pm. Looking forward to seeing all of you! Be sure to send pictures to your teacher and/or Mrs. Lunde wearing your School Spirit!

Big picture

My Child Needs.....Less Screen Time! More Work! Less Work! More Connections

Student agency, or owning my learning, refers to the level of autonomy and power that a student experiences in the learning environment. Student voice and agency are intrinsically linked. Agency gives students the power to direct and take responsibility for their learning, creating independent and self-regulating learners.

Supporting students to develop agency will develop their habit of mind to know how to change learning modalities, how to dig deeper, how to chunk or modify their work, and how to reach out to classmates and/or teachers for the human connection. All of this takes practice.

Support student agency by creating:

  • A calendar and schedule so they can see when they can take a break.
  • Create a Book Box, Writing Box, Curiosity Box, Maker Box, Arts Box and Numbers Box so students can have choice activities that are offline, creative, push for critical thinking and can add to the school day. Some students need this to go deeper and some students need this to switch learning modalities.
  • Ask students to connect what they are learning in school to the real world. What jobs use the skills they are learning? Brainstorm what skills different jobs need!
  • Connect all the inside learning to the world outside. Take a walk, look out the window for 30 minutes and just observe. This could be notes, drawing, or just looking. Next, discuss what what was seen and try to connect those observations to what is being practiced in class.

The more that learners express (expression can be talking, writing, creating, acting, designing, etc.) how skills are part of a bigger picture, then more likely learners will take the initiative to understanding what they are learning.

Dig Into the UELF Garden!

Have you explored the UELF Garden? Take a moment to ask your child about what they do in the garden and how they are continuing to have access to the garden during distance learning. The garden is an anchor for developing students' understanding of their place in the world. Students observe how nature impacts humans and how humans impact nature through the lens of past, present, and future. Take a moment to explore our school garden through the UELF Garden Channel. Thank you Garden Educator, Sandra Knoy, for your commitment to make distance learning inclusive of being outside and connecting our work to science.

Students are invited to participate in the Inquiry Work by participating in the home project being sent home on Friday. Thank you to the Garden Committee for supporting this science project-based learning at home for all of our students.

Parents and Guardians are invited to join the Garden Committee on the last Monday of every month at 4:30pm to discuss, plan, and deepen the work with the garden. Meeting links will be in the newsletter and on the school calendar.
