What We're Learning
During Reader's Workshop, we have continued reading a variety of book series to emphasize authors and how they write many books.
We also began talking about Daily 5. Throughout the school year, the class was assigned stations to work on during reader's workshop. Now, those stations are organized into categories: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Word Work, Listen to Reading, and Work on Writing. Each day the students choose two different categories to work on for stations. Next year we will continue Daily 5 and hopefully increase our stamina to practice three categories!
In Writer's Workshop, we are exploring more free writing time. The students are encouraged to write purposeful pieces that we can share with others. Some have written letters to people, created their own Elephant and Piggy books, copied words from their favorite book and around the room, created opinion books or posters to help our classroom become a better place, and so on. I have enjoyed watching this authentic writing take place!
The past couple weeks we focused on the difference between addition and subtraction, solving addition and subtraction equations using fingers and drawings, and naming shapes.
