A Note From The Principal
From the Principal:
Hello Dorr Families,
It is that time of year when Wayland Union Schools looks at staffing for the next school year. It is with a heavy heart we announce the following:
Mrs. Allen will be the Media Specialist/Librarian for Pine Street and the Literacy Coach for Pine Street and Dorr Elementary.
Mrs. Archer will be a fourth grade teacher at Pine Street.
We will miss them both, but wish them well on these new adventures in education.
Respectfully,
Mrs. Seniura
Preparing For The 2023-2024 School Year
New Procedure Starting Next Fall
As we prepare for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year, we would like to inform you of an important policy change that will affect all parents who volunteer at school, attend school parties, or chaperone field trips. Starting next school year, all parents who wish to volunteer, attend school parties, or chaperone will need to complete a background check that will be processed with the Michigan State Police.
We want to assure you that this change is being implemented with the safety and well-being of our students as our top priority. We believe that this is an important step in ensuring that our school remains a safe and secure environment for all our students.
The background check process is simple and straightforward and can be completed at this link. Rest assured that all information provided will be kept confidential and will only be used for the purpose of the background check. You will only be contacted if your background check prohibits you from attending school functions.
We understand that this may cause some inconvenience, but we hope that you will appreciate the importance of this policy change. We are committed to providing a safe and secure learning environment for our students, and we believe that this is an important step in achieving that goal.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding this policy change, please do not hesitate to contact us. We appreciate your cooperation and support in ensuring the safety of our students.
Kids Read Now Summer Reading Program
All students at Dorr Elementary had the opportunity to sign up for books with the Kids Read Now (KRN) program. KRN is a non-profit organization that delivers in-home book reading programs that get students reading more frequently and consistently. During Media class, your student browsed through a catalog of books and selected 8 that are of interest and right fit for their independent reading level. These books will be mailed to your house throughout the summer; this program has been purchased by the district and is free to all families Y5's-3rd grade. You will receive an email from Kids Read Now explaining the program in more detail. Your student(s) will receive their first book in the mail in early June. The remaining 7 books will be sent throughout the summer.
Happy Reading,
Mr. Augustin
Distinguished Artist
Dorr Elementary has a Distinguished Artist Program in which student artwork is on
display like an art gallery for the school year. Each year 9 students are chosen as a
Distinguished Artist. The distinguished artist is a student who is responsible in art,
shows their creativity and works hard on all projects. Ms. Corcoran chooses 3 to 4
pieces of artwork in which the students followed directions and completed the
project adding their creativity. A committee of staff members then votes on the
projects to choose the winner.
Congratulations Tony Saczynski!
In kindergarten we painted landscapes. We mixed the color green
using blue and yellow. Students painted different shades of blue for
their mountains and sky. We then added bright flowers at the bottom.
Tony’s painting turned out beautiful! Tony always gives his all in art.
He always takes his time and takes pride in his work. Thank you Tony
for being an outstanding student in art!

First Graders Get Hands On Science Lesson
Miss Brown's 1st grade class had a fun hands on science lesson. They learned about the life cycle of a butterfly. What better way to learn about it than to watch it first hand! Students followed the entire life cycle over the last few weeks and when the butterflies emerged from their cocoons they released them on the playground. It was a lesson they will never forget!
Young 5's Classes Celebrate Water Day!
2nd Grade Class Opinion Writing
Mrs. Smallegan's class turned their Opinion writing unit into a newspaper. It was a cool way to include all the opinions in one place for everyone to read!
Dorr Elementary Holds Inaugural 1/4 & 1/2 MIle Fun Run
Gym teacher Mr. Weber held the Inaugural 1/4 & 1/2 Mile Fun Run for students. Students learned the fundamentals of running, and trained to run during gym class. They put their skills to use on our track behind the playground. Everyone did their best running and the PTO rewarded them with snacks and cold water!
