How to Create Real World Math Experiences
Many of our children believe that "math" is only taught in the classroom during math time. As parents, we have every opportunity to build our children's math experiences and practice skills outside the classroom and make these opportunities more real for our children. The good news is it doesn't cost anything and it is so natural that our own children are unaware that they are learning and really doing math.
For instance, while in the car heading off to your children's after school activity, quiz your child on addition/subtraction and/or multiplication/division facts for extra practice. Be creative by having them count traffic lights, silver mini-vans, or anything that engages their minds in counting or practicing math facts.
When cooking, you can involve your children by having them help you to measure 1/2 cup of milk, 2 tablespoons of flour, 1 cup of butter, etc. Discuss and compare fractions as you create that culinary delight together!
At the grocery or convenience store, have your children name the coins you should use to pay your bill as well as how much change you should receive. Also, ask them when is it easier to multiply versus adding to find a total amount of a particular item.
To discuss and estimate length and time, measure pieces of furniture, family members, trees. Compare and contrast the measurements you get to find taller, shorter, longer, etc. Try making an estimate before starting and then find the answer.
Learn to measure time by choosing two activities and determining which one will take more time to complete. Does it take more time to get home from your relative's house or The Quakerbridge Mall?
At a restaurant, have your child look at the menu and discuss prices. How much or how less does it cost for particular items.
Math is everywhere! Show your children where you used math in your day and ask them to tell you what they learned in math class. Go on a math hunt like this and you'll be amazed by the number of math skills used each day!
