Keith Announcements
Congratulations Mrs. Sally Chappell!
I am very thrilled to announce that our very own Mrs. Chappell will be recognized at the May 2nd WLCSD School Board meeting as she is a recipient of the "Kindness Matters Award" for her efforts to promote peaceful and nonviolent ways to solve problems and for working toward the peaceful resolution of problems and teach about peach and harmony to others.
The Walled Lake Schools Diversity Committee received nominations for the “Kindness Matters Award” to celebrate the “Season for Nonviolence” in the Walled Lake Schools. The “Season for Nonviolence” is observed from January 30 when Gandhi was assassinated until April 4 when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. The “Kindness Matters Award” is another aspect of our school district’s celebration of the “Season for Nonviolence.”

News from Jimmy Johns Stadium and March is Reading Month Program!
April is Autism Awareness Month
April is Autism Awareness Month. This month gives us the opportunity to promote autism awareness, autism acceptance, and to draw attention to the tens of thousands facing an autism diagnosis each year.
Here at Keith we will be promoting autism awareness in a few different ways:
- Each Monday we encourage students to wear Blue. We wear blue to support and show understanding of those with autism. Wear Blue Mondays (4/8, 4/15, 4/22, 4/29)
- Each day a fact about Autism will be read aloud on the announcements. They will be read by SNAP (Students Need A Pal) students.
WLCSD Buildings, Infrastructure and Equity Bond - Election on May 7
At its Feb. 7 meeting, the Walled Lake Schools’ Board of Education approved moving forward with a $316 million bond election May 7, 2019. It will not be a tax increase to District residents. Superintendent Kenneth Gutman said: “We have a unique opportunity at this time where we can request a $316 million bond without a tax increase. The District currently has five outstanding debt obligations, four of which will be paid off within five years, and other factors that give the District this opportunity.”
To learn more about the Buildings, Infrastructure and Equity Bond, please be sure to visit the WLCSD website.

Second Step Announcement!
Parents, this week your children focused on the second step lesson below. Please take a moment to talk with your children about how they took time to show positive behavior at school.
Making Amends:
Everyone at Keith Elementary Schools makes mistakes sometimes. When you hurt someone’s feeling, it’s important to take responsibility, Taking responsibility means admitting what you did, apologizing, and offering to make the situation better. This is called making amends. It can be hard to take responsibility, but it’s the right thing to do, and it helps everyone feel better. This week, if you make a mistake, remember to find a way to make amends.
Our focus for next week is listed below. We will review the following with your children when they return to school on Monday.
Handling Name Calling:
At Keith Elementary School, we have a rule about being respectful. It’s not respectful to call people names that hurt their feelings. If someone call you a name, you can ignore the person or speak to him or her assertively. You can tell the person it’s not okay to call you names. If the person doesn’t stop calling you names, you should tell an adult. Saying kind words to others helps you make and keep friends!

We offer 8 weeks of Summer Camp for children with special needs. Summer Inclusion Camp is an option for campers who do not have special needs to be immersed in this accepting and inclusive program. The summer camp inclusion division will give typically developing children a fun and active summer while focusing on community and friendship. Extensive research documents that children with and without special needs benefit both socially and academically from inclusive services (McGregor & Vogelsberg, 1998). Inclusion increases rates of learning for children with and without disabilities when they are together (Causton-Theoharis & Theoharis, 2008).
