First day of school reminders
The first day of school is Tuesday, September 3, 2019. The school day begins promptly at 7:45 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m.
On the first day:
- ALL STUDENTS will report to Homeroom first thing on Tuesday morning.
- Students will receive copies of their schedule, lockers (if they want one), emergency cards, and other information.
- Don’t know where your homeroom is? Don’t worry, There will be signs, sorted by alphabet and grade, posted in the front lobby.
- Please review the student drop off and pick up later in this newsletter.
- Please remember the bus number you rode on to school in order to make it easier to find at the end of the school day.
- Buses will leave the grounds at 2:37 p.m. to take our students home.
- Students should bring a note book, paper, pens/pencils for first day. They will receive a syllabus from the teacher which will include a specific supply list.
- We have one lunch shift, 5th period, for all students. Please be patient the first few days while the students re-learn their lunch codes. We promise that all students will have time to eat. We have this down to a science.
- Students are not allowed to receive outside food delivered during the school day for lunch. This includes from restaurant delivery, Uber Eats, well-meaning moms and dads, or any other source. This rule must be strictly enforced for a number of reasons, including security, available staff, food services contracts, etc.
- For security reasons, at the end of the school day, all students who are not directly supervised by a teacher, coach, or club sponsor, will be asked to exit the building.
Sign in/Sign Out Procedures
All visitors to SVHS are required to sign in and out through the main office. When you arrive at the school, push the button next to the door at the far left of the main entrance. When you hear a click, you can open that door to enter the building. Please report directly to the main office where you will be asked to sign in using our automated Visitor Management System. A visitor's badge, with your picture and destination will be printed. All visitors must wear these badges at all times. When you are ready to leave, please return to the front office to discard your visitor's badge and sign out.
Security procedures for students coming and going from our building are very important. It is crucial that we have an accurate accounting of all students during the day for safety and security purposes. Therefore, ALL students leaving the building during the school day MUST sign in and out in the attendance office when leaving and returning to the building. This includes students driving themselves.
- A reminder that students who are driving may only drive themselves. Students may not transport other students during the school day in their vehicles under any circumstances.
- Students who arrive late to school will be required to report to the attendance office to sign in before they will be allowed to go to class.
- Lateness to school was among our top challenges last year. When you child arrives late s/he misses valuable instructional time and also interrupts the flow of instruction for classmates when they ultimately get to class.
- First period begins promptly at 7:45 a.m. Your child should arrive no later then 7:35 a.m. This will allow a visit to the locker and the restroom before classes begin. As my grandfather always taught me, if you’re on time, you’re late.
- Parents, please help us by reinforcing this message with your children
Join Dr. Cohen's Principal's Advisory Council
The focus of the PAC is to give students regular opportunities to provide important input and feedback on school policy and climate issues facing our school and to weigh in on decisions that impact us all as we begin to transition to the new SVHS 2.0.
All students, regardless of previous leadership experiences or GPA, are invited to apply. In order for the PAC to be successful, we need a wide range of voices represented on the PAC. Most PAC meetings will be held during the school day through Advisory. On some rare occasions, an after-school meeting may be required.
If you know of a student who would be a good fit for the PAC, please encourage the student to apply. To do so, the student must complete a brief Application. Applications are due by September 6, 2019. The application can be found by following this link: https://forms.gle/EhUFNZ5MqTa5G5z9A
