From The Principal’s Desk
Dear Glen Grove Families,
It has been three weeks since returning from the long, winter break, and we’ve been as busy as ever here at Glen Grove. It has been noted in numerous sources that the months of January and February offer noticeably heightened opportunities for deeper learning to occur. By this time of the year, a strong sense of classroom community has been established (or reinforced for our loopers) and teachers really understand their students well – both their strengths and challenges. Teachers can capitalize on these conditions to both more effectively build on strengths and more specifically tailor teaching to target challenges. The following two school structures help teachers and students capitalize on these opportunities for our students’ academic and social emotional growth:
1) As noted in our last newsletter, students recently participated in the Northwest Evaluation Association Assessment (NWEA). We now have a series of “data days” planned in which teams come together for a half-day to analyze school-wide and individual student data. We use this information to ensure that we are meeting our students’ academic needs as well as identify focused interventions we can implement for the remainder of the year if we find we are not on target with our goals. As stated in past newsletters, because there are no norms for winter testing periods, we will not be using these assessments as reporting tools for parents, and winter reports will not be sent home; however, the winter results will be reflected on the reports that will be sent home after our spring assessments are completed in. These assessments are truly meant to inform us about the progress our students are making in reading and in math and should be a natural and seamless part of the ongoing improvement process.
2) We kicked off the first week back with an entertaining, interactive, high-energy assembly to refresh our students’ memories about general behavior expectations across our school. We followed this up with dedicated class-time over a two-week period to engage our students in the powerful and proactive best practice of reviewing the school-wide behavior expectations outlined in our Glen Grove Student Handbook. If you would like to discuss or reinforce these guidelines at home, feel free to access our handbook by using the link provided on the “Students” page of the Glen Grove School website.
I end the first message of the calendar year with sincere gratitude for your ongoing support and a wish to all of you for a healthy, prosperous, peaceful, and happy new year ahead!
Respectfully,
Helena Vena

New Year Reading Resolutions
The Library Council decided this month the focus should be on reading resolutions. Glen Grove students were asked to reflect on their reading practices and were given some suggestions. Below are some of the resolutions the representatives came up with to see to share with their classes. Talk with your child at home which resolution he/she chose and why. After the students selected one, they were asked to write it down on a notecard. All the resolutions are being displayed in the library.
Read more diversely.
It is important to read books about all different people around the world. Learn about someone else’s life through a story. Books are windows into others’ worlds.
Talk about what you have read more.
Share titles and authors with others. Do a “commercial” for a book.
Unplug and read more.
Get off devices and open a book.
Visit the local library more often.
Make time to enjoy all the library has to offer.
Make reading a part of your family routine.
Make sure to make time to read each day.
Enjoy reading with your family.
Share a book with a sibling or parent or even a pet.
Carry your book with you.
If you’ve always got your book with you, those spare moments that feel like wasted time can become small gateways into the world of books.
Overdue Books
Students are allowed two checkouts at a time (unless they have donated to the Birthday Book fund). Please ensure that your child is returning his/her library books on time so that others can enjoy the titles. Students can always check their account to see when their books are due by logging into Alexandria which is found on the homepage of Glen Grove School under the LRC page. Students will need to type in their username (first initial underscore last name i.g. l_funke) and their district password (Gv######). Then click on Status and all items checked out will show on the screen. Items in red are overdue. The due dates will also appear.

Outdoor Recess Procedures
Please make sure your children are dressed appropriately for outdoor play. In cold weather boots, mittens or gloves, warm jackets, snow pants, hats and scarves are a must. If your child wears boots to school, please remember to send in shoes for them to use during physical education. The wind chill factor must be ten or below or it must be too wet or raining before we cancel outdoor recess. The children are out approximately 20 minutes. Please note that children must wear coats if temperatures are below 32°F.
We are often presented with requests for children to remain indoors at recess, generally because of allergies or as part of a recovery from illness. If it is necessary for your child to be indoors at recess, a note from the doctor will be required. We appreciate your support and cooperation with our recess procedure.
