A jack o' lantern is a carved pumpkin. It was named after the phenomenon of strange light flickering over peat dogs. The top is usually cut out and then the insides of the pumpkin are taken out and a face is normally carved into it. Then you replace the top of the pumpkin. The Irish brought the tradition of jack o' lanterns to America. In pop legend it is considered ominous and it is thought to the the soul of someone who may have been rejected.
