Andrew Jackson : Zero
Zero on a scale of 1 to Hero
Andrew Jackson
Andrew Jackson was the 7th president of the United States. He was a "common man" , so the second time he ran for president he won the election. However, Jackson was a power abusing, and terrible president. Here are only a few reasons why Jackson was a zero.
Reasons Jacksons a Zero
Killing the National Bank
Andrew Jackson thought it would be a great idea to shut down the national bank. Although many people were in favor of this, they must have overlooked the fact that this is down right unconstitutional. The supreme court was given the power to make banks, and he had no right to just get rid of it. This was just one of the many ways he abused his power. When people let him just shut it down, they were basically saying that it was okay for him to turn into a king. This was definitely not okay.
"Spoils System"
Andrew Jackson was offering government positions to the people that supported him. He was depriving people who didn't support him of good jobs. He had no right to spoil his supporters. People felt like they had to support Jackson to actually be able to get a good job. In a way Jackson was bribing them by saying, support me and i'll give you a job. In a way this is going against the first amendment because, if people are not in favor of him, they wont get the job they want, so they feel like they have to change their political views to get a good job , which isnt rihgt.
"Trail of Tears"
In 1830 Jackson passed the Indian removal act which forced the Cherokee off of their home land. Instead of declaring war against the Americans , the Indian tribe took them to court. John Marshall ruled in favor of the Cherokee Indians. However, this didn't stop Jackson from rounding up thousands of Cherokee Indians at gun point and forcing them to move westward. Jackson had no right to disregard the supreme court ruling. By ignoring the ruling Jackson was majorly abusing his power.
Political Cartoon
In this political cartoon Andrew Jackson is represented by the king. The cancelled constitution shows that many of the acts he passed and the things he did were considered unconstitutional. He was abusing his power, much like a king. He totally disregarded the constitution when making many of his decisions.
