Who Melts the Fastest?

A moment of inquiry in Kindergarten....

Snow pieces and wonder...

On Friday while on our community walk, we noticed pieces of snow in all different shapes and sizes. We started to chat along the way and on our way back to the school we wanted to bring some of these pieces back into the classroom. We had a wonder.....which one would melt the fastest...and so the race began.

We worked with our partners to place our specially selected piece of snow on a tray and then we made sure to write our names. Our hallway was filled with excited chatter about whose would melt the fastest and why. Within this moment, there were times when the conversation became focussed on our names, 'noticing' and sharing similar letters shared.

By the end of the day many of our pieces had magically turned into water and children observed that the largest piece had not melted yet because it was 'so huge'. It is so wonderfully special when the simplest moment turns into a deep engagement of learning.
