Lots of Neat Things in November, Bears!
Dear Parents,
As we approach the Thanksgiving holidays, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all of our students, families and staff for all they have done and continue to do to make the 2020-2021 school year a great one, despite any curve balls, plot twists and challenges thrown our way. Everyone has really risen to the occasion and brought the best of themselves day in and day out to make this a great school year. Whether it is kids saying thank you to teachers for what they are doing, teachers learning new tech skills on a daily basis to overcome some new quirky development or parents figuring out ways to celebrate kids and staff in ways that honor our current context, I am grateful.
Difficult moments can bring people together and as I walk down the hallways and step into classrooms, I see evidence of that dedication in all of the human beings who are teaching, learning or directly supporting each other. And, maybe more than other years, we have a chance to be grateful for the gift of being together, for hearing and seeing the sights and sounds of a virtual production, cheering kids on at volleyball and football games and hearing the stories of growing up from our kids at the end of the day. There is not a day that goes by at SBMS where I am not grateful to see those moments and I am growing in my certainty that these moments are made special because of the collaboration, hard work and commitment that has had to happen for them to occur this year. We have lots to celebrate and lots to be thankful for, despite the challenges we have had to endure and the obstacles we have faced. My hope for you and yours is that you enjoy some time with your family, to slow down, celebrate being together and get some much needed rest. We have been teammates in this work of school year 2020 and I am grateful to be on Team SBMS.
Many thanks and Happy Thanksgiving, Bears!
A few reminders:
- Bringing Items to SBMS: Beginning Wednesday, November 4th, SBMS will only allow the drop off of the following: chromebooks, assignments, books for Language Arts or medicine for the school nurse. Unfortunately, we are seeing too many families dropping off items to the front office that are unrelated to these things. The LearnSBISD plan indicates no drop off of items should be occurring and that visitors to the campus are restricted. As we watch numbers of parents dropping off items to our office and numbers of COVID cases tick upwards, we are tightening up our practices to make clearer what is of necessity and what is not. To ensure that your child has a back up plan for lunch, please visit SBISD Child Nutrition and put money on their account so they can purchase a lunch: https://www.springbranchisd.com/about/departments/finance/child-nutrition-services/payments-and-refunds.
- Health and Safety Reminder: One of the many unfortunate issues related to COVID-19 is that the signs and symptoms for COVID-19 can mirror other illnesses. Our LearnSBISD plan requires parents to complete a Health Screener for their students each morning and indicates that students must not report to school with symptoms delineated within that screener to prevent the potential spread of COVID-19. When a child visits with Ms. Mulvey, our SBMS Nurse, and presents symptoms that could be related to COVID-19 she must follow a protocol that involves presenting the symptoms and context for the child (duration of symptoms, if a parent has tested positive or exposure to someone else has occurred) to the SBISD Intake Nurse and then work with the family to send the child home for a period of time. We fully recognize how stressful the "here and now" is for all families, but ask that your interactions with our nurse are kind and patient. We are happy to ask questions on your behalf and answer any questions you may have, but please know the health and safety of all students, their families and our staff are at the forefront of all that we do at SBMS. This is a very difficult year to serve as a school nurse and we are so grateful that Ms. Mulvey chose this as her life's work.
Be Well,
Stefanie Spencer

SBISD Celebrates Our Nurse's Monday, November 16th!
SBISD will be celebrating all of the work of our nurses at each school this Monday night at the SBISD Board Meeting. Recognizing we all cannot attend the meeting, please join me in thanking Ms. Mulvey and every SBISD school nurse who supports one of your children in our district. They have really risen to the occasion of this year and operated out of kindness and concern for the well being of our kids and families in very tough circumstances! You are welcome to send messages of gratitude to Ms. Mulvey at mercedes.mulvey@springbranchisd.com.
Thanks and congratulations, Ms. Mulvey, for a very well deserved recognition!
Fall Picture Day at SBMS- CHANGE in Dates
GenTx Week: November 16th
Generation TX Week (GenTx Week) is a statewide initiative meant to celebrate and educate students on the different pathways and careers students can explore in preparation for post-secondary planning. In preparation for this week and for making plans for high school, our students have been taking part in studies around post-secondary planning.
Sixth Grade students have taken part this year in career cluster explorations and learned about different fields of work in which to consider. Seventh and Eight Graders have recently taken a Career Cluster Finder in Naviance, which will guide them in their selections for their high school course selections. More information will come out related to the outcomes of that Career Cluster Finder, but in the meantime we would love all students and families to get excited about SBMS' celebration of GenTx Week. Please encourage your SBMS Bear to wear a college shirt (from any college, not just Rice) on Friday, November 20th! Show your T24 excitement!
SBMS Finals Schedule
As you are aware, the SBISD calendar was amended at the beginning of the year. Part of the amendment meant that middle school students will not have early release days during the last week of the semester, but will instead have full days of instruction and final exams. To view the SBISD calendar, you may click here.
During the week of December 14th-18th, SBMS is planning to administer MAP Math and Reading to all students Monday and Tuesday during math and language arts classrooms and final exams Wednesday through Friday according to this schedule. Reviews for final exams will be posted by December 7th in each teacher's itsLearning course.
We intend to virtually proctor MAP and semester exams for those students students taking part in remote learning for the second nine weeks. Directions for how to proceed if that relates to you and your family will be sent home after Thanksgiving.

SBISD Health Screener for In-Person Learners
Prior to the start of the school year, all families completed the SBISD Health & Safety Protocol Parent Acknowledgement Form. Included in these protocols is ensuring that every child coming to campus has a completed SBISD Health Screener every morning.
As a reminder, the health screener can be accessed via the district website (there is a blue box on the homepage titled ‘HEALTH SCREENER’ or by clicking here.) High school students may complete their own screener, but not those of their siblings.
Parents, it is critical that you report to your child's school if your child has tested positive for COVID-19, has had prolonged (15 or more minutes) direct exposure to someone who is COVID-19 positive, or is displaying symptoms of COVID-19. Please do not send your child to school. Please do complete the health screener and report to your school attendance office or nurse immediately. Please be sure to provide your contact information including a daytime telephone number where you can be reached.
View this video to see how to turn the screener into an icon (like an app) on your phone or tablet home screen for easier access:
See you soon! Stay tuned for messaging every Friday from SBISD!

¡Muchas cosas interesantes en noviembre, osos!
Queridos padres,
