Digital Citizenship
Students have completed the next two lessons in Digital Citizenship. They were lessons on Cyber-bullying and Digital Footprint.
In the Cyber-bullying lesson students learned: 1. Do not cyberbully anyone, ever. 2. If someone is Cyber-bullying you, use the STOP acronym: Step away from the device. Tell a trusted adult. Only use approved apps and websites. Finally, Pause and think before you react.
In the lesson on Digital Footprint students learned about being careful to not overshare on social media because everything students post is recorded and students may be held accountable for those posts in the future.

School Counselor's Corner
Parents,
Every three weeks I display a new Hoosier Hot Job in a couple of different places around the building. Hoosier Hot Jobs are jobs that show a large growth rate and will be needed in the State of Indiana through the year 2022. Since the students at Pendleton Elementary Primary won't even be out of Middle School by 2022 and the Hot Jobs will probably have changed by the time they get out of High School, I am trying to focus on certain Essential Job Skills that are needed with each job that is featured. These Essential Job Skills are skills that will serve your students well no matter what career they may choose in their future. For the past couple of weeks we have featured the Heavy Tractor-Trailer Truck Driver and the essential job skill of "work ethic".
What is work ethic? Work ethic involves the belief that by working hard we not only will strengthen our character but also our individual abilities. We gain self- respect, satisfaction, and fulfillment when we practice good work ethic. So you feel good about yourself when you work hard. Work ethic also involves the desire to do each task of your job well and trying to do it the very best that you can. It involves trying to stay organized with your thoughts and completing tasks all the way through with our best effort.
It is very important for us as parents to teach our students that only one person can hold them accountable for strong work ethic and that is themselves. Work ethic is a habit that needs to be developed by them and encouraged by you as parents. There is a difference between nagging, expecting perfection, and holding our children accountable for doing a good job. It is important to give our students opportunities to do tasks and also provide constructive criticism so that they learn what it takes to give a good work ethic. It is also important for you to make known your expectation of them when they come to school as good work ethic is a habit that has to be developed. They should be able to understand that they will develop good work ethic by doing the things they are supposed to be doing, working hard and staying focused on the work they are doing, and making sure that they are doing it the very best that they can. If we make them accountable for these things strong work ethic will become a habit and they will not only be helping themselves now, but also in the future as it will help them achieve the job that they want when they become adults.
Until next week.......
