Literacy/Reading
We are continuing our unit on Historical Fiction. We analyzed the book, Pink and Say, which is about two boys who were in the Civil War and the trials and tribulations they went through. Using the book, we practiced getting into a character's shoes or trying to see the world through the character's eyes.
Next week, we will continue working on Historical Fiction by delving into a historical fiction novel study. Please ask your child what novel they are reading. Most of this reading will take place at school, but students are expected to be reading another book of their choice at home and when they complete the required chapters in their class novel.
Math
This week in math we will continue exploring shapes in our geometry unit. We are looking at the properties of quadrilaterals and triangles. We will finish this unit at the end of the week and test early next week.
MAPS testing is coming up next week. We will look at past scores and set a new goal for the middle of the year. Please take a few minutes to talk about your child's goal and the importance of this test.
After MAPS we will get started on fractions which is a huge part of the 5th grade EOG. It's amazing how quickly this year is flying by! Please continue to review past concepts including multiplication and decimals. A great place to find review videos is on khan academy, study jams and IXL math. All sites have videos as well as online practice.
Science
This week in Science we are continuing to learn about weather as we examine the difference between weather and climate. We will be looking at the different types of clouds and the weather, they bring both this week and next. Next week, we will also learn about air pressure and wind. The next Science Quiz will be on Tuesday, January 24 covering the topics mentioned above.
