Dear Winter Park Band families,
Job well done to the Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Symphony on Saturday's Guest Conductor Workshop Concert. I'm very proud of their work last week, and I can't wait to get back to our music on Tuesday to keep moving forward to Concert MPA! I'm also glad we were able to feature one of our saxophone quartets that performed at last week's District Solo & Ensemble - beautiful performance! Dr. Kaatz was extremely complimentary of our program, and specifically noted how our students carried themselves in rehearsal and were collaborators both in those rehearsals and on the concert. We are so thankful for Dr. Kaatz's time and talents to help make our upcoming MPA performances the best they can be!
I spoke to the students about this briefly before the concert, but great benefits and lessons can be taken from our annual guest workshops. Learning that seeking help is not a weakness but a strength. Being open to feedback and willing to make adjustments. Sometimes most importantly, being a "coachable" or "teachable" individual, and being mindful about your craft. These are skills that go beyond making music that will serve them well after they leave the Winter Park Band.
DOOR-2-DOOR
The week is finally here! After being required to reschedule, our Annual DOOR-2-DOOR Fundraiser will take place THIS Saturday, 2/26! Get your neighbors ready! This is a big week for the Band program, and a big opportunity for us to re-establish ties to our Winter Park community at large that were put on hold during the last school year. I would like to thank everyone in advance for their time and efforts for D2D, especially our lead parent volunteers Heather Ribaric, Robyn Fodor, and Natalie Storch along with the entire Band Booster Board for their preparation to make this a successful event. An itinerary for the day can be found HERE. Looking forward to a day of community and camaraderie building with our students and the residents of the WPHS zone, while also supporting the future of the Band.
PARENTS: Something that has helped a ton in the past was having various parents post on their "Next Door" or "Neighborhood" app along with your neighborhood's Facebook page about the fundraiser. You may copy and paste the link below to add to your post for residents, family and friends out of town, colleagues at work, etc. to donate to the DOOR-2-DOOR Fundraiser online for their ease of use. For those students eligible to perform at State Solo & Ensemble MPA, I have extended the deadline to sign up to Tuesday, 2/22 at 2:30 PM. Remember, all the same guidelines for District S&E MPA apply at the State level. Please email me if you have any questions.
Next week, our three concert bands will be performing at District 8 Concert MPA hosted by Cypress Creek HS. All information concerning Concert MPA can be found later in this Newsletter. One thing to point out - all Concert Band students will be reporting directly to the Main Campus on the day of their performance, Friday, March 4. Please consider chaperoning your student's band for this event. It's a chance to see the students perform and also do what they do every day in class in the sight-reading room.
Lastly, this week's Wind Symphony rehearsal on Wednesday, 2/23 has been canceled. We will still have our Side-by-Side Rehearsal at Audubon Park School Thursday, 2/24.

Hello everyone! Congratulations to the bands for the wonderful performance on Saturday! All of the bands sounded amazing!
Door 2 Door is coming up THIS WEEKEND, so please contact Heather Ribaric with questions or if you can help. Thank you to Heather for helping to organize all of the students and drivers! There are a LOT of moving parts. Also, please take a look at the calendar for chaperoning needs for MPA in March!

Concert MPA is coming up March 3rd and 4th and we want our students to look and feel their best in their Concert uniforms! Please have your student try on their uniform asap to see if their dress or pants hem needs to be adjusted (you or they may have noticed at yesterday's concert!). Students will grow during the year.
If dress skirts are wrinkled, please try hanging them in a steamy bathroom or use a steamer, if you have one, before the concert. If you need assistance with hemming or if something no longer fits, please reach out to Amanda Schaefer, Uniform Chair, at schaefer.momma@gmail.com or text at 386-214-5432.

DOOR-2-DOOR FUNDRAISER - THIS Saturday, 2/26
The week has finally arrived! DOOR-2-DOOR - our biggest and most important fundraiser of the year is this Saturday!
In short, our Winter Park Band students will go door-to-door asking our Winter Park HS community for donations on Saturday, February 26 (rescheduled date). As a mandatory fundraiser, each student receives a "share" of the funds raised that day. Shares typically fall somewhere between $70.00 - $90.00.

PARENTS - We need you! Our parents literally make this fundraiser work by transporting groups of students around our WPHS attendance zone. Parents who volunteer to drive for DOOR-@-DOOR will earn their student another "share" to use toward band fees. If you haven’t signed up to drive, please do so this week, if possible. For every driver that signs up I need 3 things:
- Copy of drivers license
- Copy of insurance card that will be valid at time of D2D. If it’s renewing between now and February, wait to send me the updated info.
- A screenshot of your active and approved Additions status.
If you’re not Additions approved yet, but would like to drive, go ahead and get that approval right away at: https://www.ocps.net/departments/community_resources_/a_d_ditions_school_volunteers
It may seem like there’s plenty of time, but I need to have this information collected over Winter Break and we will all be so busy with the holidays, it’s helpful if you can sign up and send me the info as soon as possible.

The Winter Guard gave 2 great performances this weekend! On Friday night they debuted their uniforms at Auxiliary MPA where they received an Excellent rating. On Saturday they performed again at the FFCC show hosted by University HS (Orange City). They will be finishing their show in the upcoming weeks..

Pride of the Wildcats - Winter Park Band Fleet Vehicle Support and Improvement
We are very proud of our Operations side of the Winter Park Band. We have a dedicated group of parents that take the Winter Park Band & Color Guard to all their events. However, without the use of the large tractor trailer that transports our equipment to and from each marching band event and the small trailer for color guard the task would be next to impossible.
Through the years, the operations group has made many changes to the trailers to improve the functionality for the Winter Park Band. Historically, all of the monies have been raised through private contributions of a select groups of parents and through the Alumni Foundation. Because of this the need of a full fundraiser event to deflect the cost of the band operations was never really until now.
In effort to maintain our large trailer’s top-notch condition, we are planning to do some MAJOR repairs and improvements to the trailer that is now in its 15th year of service for WPHS band. Additionally, we need to either replace (preferable) the small trailer or make it road worthy again.
Some of the items on our list of improvements are costly, including:
- Repairing some minor damage to larger trailer
- Repainting the lower section of the large trailer
- Rewrapping the upper section of the large trailer
- Replace wheel bearings on front axle
- Moving the back stairway to the back of the trailer
- Replacing or repairing the small trailer
- And other improvements to keep our kids and volunteers safe.
Since we are re-wrapping the large trailer, we will be selling sponsor spots on the larger trailer to defray the cost. There are 10 spots that are available for $1,000 each and the entire front of the trailer for $5,000. These opportunities are a great way to support the Winter Park Band and they are also tax deductible.

We will be also seeking volunteers to help at a Trailer Work- Days throughout the month of January. We will be repairing minor body damage, painting the trailer and removing the old logos. Please contact Keith Gavin @ kgavin@sscands.com if you can assist.

PRIVATE LESSONS
Unlike a full band rehearsal experience, studying with a private teacher focuses in on the student’s individual needs. Students who study privately once a week from a professional musician are usually those who excel and find Band more enjoyable. These students frequently earn positions in honor groups like All-State and All-County, and make entry into our more advanced bands like Wind Symphony and Jazz Ensemble I. Some even go on to earn college scholarships, even if they are not majoring in music!
