The Food Drive Returns... and is ongoing! We have collected 200 items so far. Way to go Sunset School!
Families aren’t just hungry during the holidays. Many families are still struggling with hunger. At Sunset, we are a caring community, and we want to help families in need. Because of this, our school is doing a mini food drive out of the kindness of our hearts to help fight hunger. This also means the canned food wars will go on...
Episode two of the canned food wars, “The Food Drive Returns”, is starting, its back and it brought snacks!
Here are some items the food pantry needs
- Cans of soup (with pop tops ideally) or cup o'noodles
- individual servings of mac and cheese
- fruit or applesauce cups (biggest need since these are the most expensive on their limited budget)
- cracker packs (Handi-Snacks with cheese or peanut butter on one side and crackers to dip on the other side)
- snack/granola bars
- popcorn (box with individual packs)
- hot chocolate (box with individual packs)
- Fruit snacks/leather

Sunset School Library
Students at Sunset have been immersed in reading all school year long! I am so thrilled that our students have been using our beautiful school library to find new authors, discover new genres, and read old favorites. As the end of the year approaches, it is time to transition from the Sunset School Library to the West Linn Public Library for reading materials. This means that all of the books are due back to school by Friday, May 31st. We have set this date to do any repairs, put the shelves back in order, and to analyze the collection to determine what needs to be purchased over the summer to start the school year. This way when the students return in September, our library will be ready for all of our readers! I appreciate how wonderfully everyone helps their children find all of the library books checked out and makes sure that each child returns his or her books to the library.
Have a wonderful summer. See you next year and as always, keep reading!
Sincerely,
Tara Perkins,
Teacher-Librarian

SAFETY SPOTLIGHT — Reducing Herbicide Use in WLWV
If you've been out to the Athey Creek Middle School soccer fields recently, you might have noticed a new addition to the fence lines that surround the school's property.
The black covering that can be seen along the base of District fencing is actually a specially-designed fence guard that prevents the growth of pesky weeds that can lead to dangerous pests. The new environmental safety feature is just one example of the District’s efforts to reduce the use of herbicides across school grounds. Read more about those efforts on the district website: https://www.wlwv.k12.or.us/Page/15322

Teen Leadership Training
For students entering grades 8 - 10 in the fall
CREST’s Teen Leadership Training is the first step to becoming a camp counselor with our summer camp programs for kids, and is an excellent way for teens to gain leadership skills and career experience. CREST counselors are role models for our young campers, and are often a camper’s favorite part of the camp experience. As a counselor, students help lead games, nature hikes, and other activities at camp. The Teen Leadership Training will help counselors gain leadership skills, including public speaking, group management, and teamwork. We focus on learning and practicing the fun games and activities that we do at camp, so that counselors will be prepared to help lead a small group of campers and be part of our dynamic camp staff. After the training, counselors can choose to volunteer at one of our primary level summer camps.
