Featured Sorella: Meet Michael Friedlander!
Tell Us About Yourself: Occupation, relationship status, children, pets, where you live, where you're from, hobbies, etc.:
I am a veterinarian with 3 furry children: Mona Lisa (18 years old), Annabelle (11 years old), and Trudy - a sassy little Sphinx hairless cat (5 years old). Annabelle and Trudy are both rescues. I've lived in the NW Atlanta/Vinings area for nearly 20 years although I was born in Jacksonville, FL. I grew up in the northeast and lived in Tokyo on a college scholarship for a year. I am passionate about daily meditation. Even when the world is caving in, it's a must for me. I love long bike rides with good company and an easy attitude and my community of close women friends that keep me in line and restore my sanity when I get to "the edge." As you can tell by my "fur-kids" - I love old cats that purr and cuddle and crazy kittens that just insist everything in life be fun. I love the wonder of watching a child discover a kitten of puppy for the first time. I'm passionate about service and charity; my biggest life lessons have come from learning to serve others and become useful to others. Random acts of kindness are a great way to keep me grateful for all that I have today. I love travel, GREAT ETHNIC FOOD, and culture -- we are all so much more alike than different!
What made you decide to join Sorella:
Wanted to be part of a group of women who foster and support other women who want to ride and be active in a supportive atmosphere.
Do you do Road, Mountain or Cyclocross:
Road, interested in Cyclocross.
Types of bike(s) you ride:
Blue NX 7, trek 5.9 Madonne, and "Earl," my fixie I like to ride in the winter on the SCT when it's nice and windy (a great work out!)
Your Favorite place to ride:
Stone mountain, Rome, Gaps.
Your dream ride:
Majorca Island cycling camp.
Biggest accomplishment on your bike:
The Gaps, for sure!
Why you love being a Sorella:
Sorella women are confident but also very personable and approachable. They seem quite focused and incredibly accomplished, but have not forgotten their first experiences cycling and are usually the first to volunteer to help, train, and support the new comers who want to learn and gain confidence. I am always searching for ways to express my belief that all I really have in this world is my relationships--- Sorella Cycling gives me many opportunities to lend a hand and be part of the positive energy of women helping women.

Race Report: Reflecting on the Ga Games
It was a cool Saturday morning on the start of Georgia Games. There was a light breeze, but you could tell the heat was on its way in as the sun continued to rise. It was my first road race back since having surgery in March, and was very much wanting to do well.
Before the start of the race, the other sorellas representing- Eleanor Adams and Wendy Gardiner- and I got to catch up. What Eleanor always says before a race is, ''remember, we're just out for a bike ride.'' That phrase always helps calm the nerves the first few miles while the group settles in.
It was a phenomenal course, a hilly 38 miles through the back roads of White, GA. The girls in our cat were all very strong, and all had the goal of bringing home a medal. We formed a small group with a Free Flite girl, and a girl from L5 Flyers where we alternated pulling. Together we tried to keep the Nova Nordic team from making a move.
The final mile was an interesting one... the heat was picking up and sun began beating down. Coming up quickly from behind was an angry men's peloton fighting for the finish. Made up of nearly 50 ego-driven men, they all flew by yelling at us to move. Thinking this would be a great time to make a break, Eleanor and I jumped into their peloton (which, you aren't supposed to do- we didn't know!), and it worked. And let me tell you, that girl can sprint!!! We were able to drop our group and fight a strong fight for the 1-2 podium spots.
Every race you come away with learning something. For me, I learned that while my endurance has improved dramatically since being off, my sprint work needs a lot of attention. I also learned not to jump into the men's peloton to drop someone.
And ultimately, I was reminded that racing is amazing and something any woman on a bike needs to try. No matter how nervous you may be, remember- ''Finishing is better than not finishing. And not finishing always trumps never starting.''
Sorella School: Hormone Health
Each month, the Sorella newsletter will feature a new article called "Sorella School" where you can learn more about cycling-specific lingo, culture, events, nutrition and other things you always wanted (but never knew you needed) to know. This month Sorella race team member, Sarah Hoots, discusses her experience with hormone testing and the impact cortisol can have on your energy level!
7 Signs Your Cortisol and Adrenals are BUSTED.
You spend countless hours training, working out, eating right and buffeting your body…
…and hundreds or even thousands of dollars on gym equipment, training equipment, health supplements, healthy food, and if you're a triathlete, marathoner, cyclist, adventure racer, obstacle racer or anything like that, travel and race entry fees too…
…but if you're overlooking your hormone health, you're often either taking two steps forward and one step back, or stagnating in your performance and fitness, or worse yet, backsliding in your results!
I have personally gone through metabolic damage and what my physician called a “cortisol crash”. This was back at the start of 2016 when I had hit an all-time low. I had no energy to do the things I wanted to do, felt like I couldn’t eat more than 1400 calories a day without gaining weight, and my mood swings were definitely more than the normal ‘PMS’ symptom.

Protecting your Hair On and Off the Bike
By Sarah Hoots
If you’re like me, having date night ready sun-kissed waves is definitely summer hair #goals. But with sweat, salt, air, chlorine, and scorching rays to contend with during long hours on the bike, chances are the picture-perfect hair color you paid good money for is starting to look pretty worse for the wear.
For expert advice on how to protect your locks this summer, I turned to my personal stylist, Taylor Logan (Jamison Shaw Hairdressers). When it comes to dry, brittle hair prone to breakage in the summer heat, she’s seen it all.
Keeping your hair shiny and healthy in the summer is a struggle for everyone, but it’s a particular challenge if you have thin, or color treated hair. Even if you have the best salon dye-job, it can still fade if you don’t show your strands some TLC. “The sun causes dehydration and the color molecules will sip out if you don’t protect them,” Logan says. “When your hair’s dry or brittle, those colors aren’t going to want to stay and you are prone to breakage.”
This is a fair warning to those of you who have unicorn hair and don’t want to lose that magic before summer ends.
So what to do? Here are your three tips to keep your hair hydrated while on AND off the bike.
1. Hydrate with a masque while riding. If I’m riding over three hours on the bike, I might as well be multi-tasking, right? To protect my hair, I keep a bottle of spray water with me to moisten my hair before putting on a deep conditioner (I use the Moroccan Oil Deep Moisture Masque) and braid my hair with it in before putting my helmet on. It allows my hair to condition while I’m riding and prevents the sun from drying it out.
2. Use Vitamin C when hitting the pool or ocean. Vitamin C will remove all of the chlorine and heavy metals from the hair. The acidic nutrient balances out more the more basic pool stabilizer, returning your hair to its natural pH. To apply, mix a tablespoon of vitamin C powder with a pint of water, apply it all over your hair, and rinse after one to three minutes.
3. Stay sun protected. You already know how to layer SPF to guard your skin, but sun protection should extend to your hair. “Sunbathing color-treated hair can be very damaging,” says Logan. Even if your locks are au naturel or wear a hat, “if you are going to be in the sun for a long time, you definitely want to use a product with sunscreen in it,” Logan advises. Make sure it has UV protection.

A mountain bike, cross bike, or road bike with gravel tires are required to accomplish these rides. The pace of the rides will be set by those in attendance, but will be on the order of 10-14 mph.
